Hilda Silver

Hilda Louise Spencer Silver, 76, of Town and Country Apartments, Apt. 210, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at her home.
A native of Gaffney, she was the widow of William James Silver and the daughter of the late Clauford Alonzo Spencer and Alleen Eaker Spencer. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Shelby.
Surviving are a sister, Christine Margaret Spencer Glover of Dallas, N.C.; a nephew, Steve Glover of Gastonia, N.C.; and a niece, Pamela Hoffman of Gastonia.
In addition to her spouse and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Eugene Spencer.
Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Bill Pheagin.
Memorials may be made to SRMC Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave. Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302.

Bill Hains
Hordis Brothers retiree
Fort Mill — William Morris "Bill" Hains, 57, of 227 Straighway Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at his home.
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., he was the husband of Linda Wood Hains and the son of Helen Charlene Ross Hains and the late William Franklin Hains. He was a graduate of Jeffersonville High School in Jeffersonville, Ohio, and Ohio University in Athens. He was retired from Hordis Brothers and was a member of First Baptist Church. He served as a U.S. Army captain from 1967 to 1970 and received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Billy Hains of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Marianne Hains of Hoboken, N.J., and Paula Eberlin of Columbia; a brother, Alan Hains of Urbana, Ohio; and two sisters, Gayle Hains Pfeiffer of Brandon, Fla., and Kathy Miller of Washington Court House, Ohio.
Services will be Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at 11 a.m. Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Bedwell officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens with Dr. Roger Aycock officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel.

Margaret Crosby
Retired real estate agent
Margaret Kitchens Crosby, 66, of 106 Huntington Dr., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at her home.
A native of Gaffney, she was the widow of Clarence Chuck Crosby and the daughter of the late James H. Kitchens Jr. and Beulah Elizabeth Kitchens. She was a retired real estate agent and formerly employed by the S.C. Dept. of Youth Services. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by two daughters, Carla Weaver of the home and Brandi J. Wray of Blacksburg; three sons, Curtis A. Crosby, Russell W. Crosby, Jason C. Crosby, all of Gaffney; two brothers, James H. Kitchens Jr. and Thomas W. Kitchens, both of Gaffney; two sisters, Helen Roberts of Woodruff and Nora Vinesett of Gaffney; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel conducted by the Revs. Lane Carter and Kevin Childs.
The family is at the residence.

James Humphries
Brick mason
James Brittan Humphries, 40, of 237 Griggs Road, Blacksburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at his home.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of Clayton Herman Humphries and Betty Sue Borders Dickson. He was a brickmason and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a step father, David Dickson of Blacksburg; a step mother, Carol McCraw Humphries of Gaffney; a sister, Tammy Humphries Hambright of Blacksburg; a stepbrother, Tim Parker of Gaffney; a stepsister, Sherry Alvarez of Gaffney; and maternal grandmother, Dorcas Borders of Blacksburg.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Vernon Craig.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Gordon Mortuary and at other times will be at 310 Antioch Road, Blacksburg.

Roger J. George
White Plains Baptist member
Cowpens — Roger Joe George, 53, of 1610 Old Pacolet Rd, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.
A native of Cherokee County, he was a son of the late William Sterling and Lucille Horne George. He was a member of White Plains Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Rhonda Hames of Chesnee and Kathie Suttles of Morganton, N.C.; one son Michael George of Cowpens; two stepdaughters, Tina Bridges of Cowpens and Rita Fowler of Blacksburg; four sisters, Barbara Law of Converse, Sandra Parton of Cowpens, Janet Bevins of Columbia and Kay Blackwell of Pacolet; three brothers, Steve George of Cowpens, Willard George of Sarasota, Fla., and Henry George of Gaffney; four grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Benny Davis.
The family is at their respective homes.

Rev. C.D. Roach
Retired minister and community servant
Rev. Clifford Darnell Roach, 88, of 515 Kentucky Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Polk County, N.C., he was the widower of Beulah Izora Mahaffey Roach and was a son of the late Lindsey Rochell Roach and Bertha Davidson Roach. He was a graduate of Harris Station High School and became a licensed minister in 1937. He was a pastor at the following churches: Gaffney Wesleyan, 1945-1950; Landrum Wesleyan, 1950-1951; Davis Chapel Wesleyan, 1951-1957; Knighton Chapel Wesleyan, 1957-1959; and Converse Wesleyan, 1959-1999, when he retired from pastoring. He was a member of Providence Wesleyan Church and a founder of the Spartanburg Holiness Association, Mayo Tabernacle.
Rev. Roach helped organize Rescue 7 (Chesnee) in the early 1960s and served as its captain until 1978. He was Fire Chief of Chesnee Community Fire Department from 1962-1970 and was inducted into the Spartanburg County Fire Chief Association Hall of Fame on Dec. 10, 1992.
Rev. Roach was preceded in death by a son, Rev. Kenneth Roach; two grandsons, Benjamin Earl Roach and Timothy Dewitt Roach; a sister, Bernice Mahaffey; and a brother, William "Bill" Roach.
He is survived by four daughters, Carolyn R. Lee and Renee Roach of Chesnee, Brenda R. Lee of Cowpens, Diane R. Woody of Wellford; six sons, Dewitt Roach, Randy Roach and David Roach (who served as his caregiver for the last few years), all of Chesnee, Calvin Roach of Roebuck, Wayne Roach of Mooresboro, N.C., Danny Roach of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Eunice R. Jolley of Chesnee, Virl R. McNeil of Robbins, N.C., Ruth R. McCraw of Waco, N.C.; 31 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chesnee First Baptist Church conducted by the Revs. Scott Buchanan, W.D. James, Fred Quidley, Robert Smith and V.A. Mitchell. Burial will follow in Springhill Memorial Gardens. All the ministers and their wives are invited to serve as honorary escorts.
The family is at the home and will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at Forest Law Mortuary in Chesnee.

Janice Burris
Gaffney native
Janice Cassandra Mae Burris, 41, of Decatur, Ga., died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at her home.
A native of Gaffney, she was the daughter of Johnnie adn Alice Burris. She lived most of her life in Augusta and Atlanta, Ga.
Services will be held at 1p.m. Saturday at Barnes Avenue Friendship Chapel 10, Fort Gordon, Ga., conducted by Rev. Betty W. Pace of Power Ferry United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
