J.R. Hamrick
Retired from AT&T
J.R. Hamrick, 55, of Conyers, Ga., died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001.
Mr. Hamrick was a retired engineer with AT&T after 33 years of service. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and was membership director of Local A.B.A.T.E.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Hamrick; children, John Hamrick of Gaffney, Jennifer Columbus of Virginia Beach, Va., Peggy Barber, Jackie Simmons, Nancy Wade, all of Conyers, and Clay Elliott of Shady Dale, Ga.; mother, Juanita Brown of Gaffney; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Dr. Bob Winstead officiating.

Edith W. Ellis
Gaffney native
Edith W. Ellis, 82, of 4820 Irvington Ave., Jacksonville, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Community Hospice of N.E. Florida.
Born in Gaffney, she was the wife of Quitman Ellis and daughter of the late O.H. Welchel and the late Folsom Wilson Welchel. She was a former sewing company supervisor and a member of Lakeshore Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Lonnie Q. Ellis of Jacksonville; a brother, Charles Rochell Welchel of Beverly Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Lucy Mildred Rouse of Inverness, Fla., and Evelyn Griffin of Gaffney; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dewitt Clyde. The family will receive friends Friday from 1-2:30 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Evelyn Griffin, 209 Welchel Rd., Gaffney.

Braxton Guffey
Retired from Cone Mills
CLIFFSIDE, N.C. – Braxton McFadden Guffey, 82, of 350 Boiling Springs Rd., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late James Bryant and Emma Sue McFadden Guffey. He retired as water plant operator at Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant, and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, Training Union leader in the junior department and was a member of the Brotherhood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Steve Guffey, and a grandson, Todd Guffey.
Surviving are his wife, Marie Taylor Guffey of the home; two sons, James Guffey of Terre Haute, Ind., and Mickey Guffey of Noblesville, Ind.; a sister, Mary Sue Dobbins of Spindale; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cliffside Baptist Church with the Revs. Charlie Blackwell and Steve Chastain officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
Visitation will be tonight from 7-9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside.

Olin Powell
Employed by Doran Textiles
Olin Keith Powell, 61, of 208 White St., Casar, N.C., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at his residence.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Broadus and Inez Hames Powell. He was employed by Doran Textiles for 38 years and was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Olin “Johnnie” Powell, Rickey Powell and Brian Powell, all of Shelby; a daughter, Sandra Ann Powell of Kings Mountain; a brother, Kenneth Powell of Boiling Springs; two sisters, Kay Price of Boiling Springs and Norma Terry of Cliffside; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held today at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home with the Rev. Charlie Blackwell officiating. Burial will be in Cliffside Cemetery.
The family is at the home of Johnnie and Randi Powell, 2331 Washburn Rd., Shelby.

Eric Childers
York County native
BLACKSBURG – Eric Dwayne Childers, 20, of 131 Jordan Lane, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001.
A native of York County, he was the son of Raymond Curtis Bush of Kings Mountain and Elizabeth Darlene Childers Butler of Clover. He attended Bowling Green Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Jesse and Helen Childers of Blacksburg; paternal grandmother, Barbara Bush of Kings Mountain; two brothers, Jack Brad Philbeck of Clover and Nicky Green of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Crystal Childers of Gastonia and Tosha Butler of Clover; and two step-sisters, Dana Green and Heather Green, both of Kings Mountain.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at South Gastonia Church of God with the Revs. Sam Barnette and Bobby Gilley officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Gardens, York.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Myrtle Champion
Services for Myrtle Amos McCraw Champion, 84, of 310 Overhill Dr., will be held today at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel conducted by the Revs. James Price and Allen Blanton. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the residence.

Ollie R. Peterson
Retired textile employee
Ollie Rae Peterson, 69, of 1108 Mullinax Farm Rd., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Luther Peterson and the late Ethel Mullinax Peterson. She was a retired textile employee and a member of McKowns Mountain Baptist Church.
Surviving are a brother, Lyman Peterson of Blacksburg; and four sisters, Vergie Dover of Hickory Grove, Sybil Mullinax, Frances Peterson and Peggy Dover, all of Gaffney.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at McKowns Mountain Baptist Church conducted by the Revs. Dean Painter and Ken Covington. Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Dover, Andy Dover, Bobby Dover, David Peterson, Randy Peterson and Rick Peterson.
The family is at the residence.

Boots Kay
Gaffney native
ANTREVILLE – Annie Lou “Boots” Huskey Kay, 79, resident of 76 Keowee Rd., widow of Robert Oliver Kay, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Olivia Kay Mouchet, in Bowersville, Ga.
Born in Gaffney, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Walter Junius and Nannie Ophelia Young Huskey. She was a homemaker and was a very active member of all phases of the First Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors are a daughter, Olivia Kay Mouchet and son-in-law, Paul Wade Mouchet, of Bowersville, Ga.; granddaughters, Tara M. Shaver and Kristen Kay Mouchet; and a brother, Charles L. Huskey of Greenville.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Lynn Kay; brothers, Ernest Huskey, Furman Huskey and T.C. Huskey; and sisters, Alma Corine Weaver, Willie Mae (Billie) Simmons and Olive Penney.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at 3 p.m. from First Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Donnie Murdoch and the Rev. Mark Weaver officiating. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday.
The body is at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville, where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today. The family will be at 76 Keowee Road in Antreville.

Julia Maness
Blacksburg native
Julia Virginia Davis Maness, 79, of 210 Oakdale Dr., Amory, Miss., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in North Mississippi Medical Center, Tupelo, Miss.
Born in Blacksburg, she was the widow of John Roland Maness and daughter of the late William Clyde Davis and the late Carrie Starnes Davis. She lived in Gaffney before moving to Amory in 1968. She was a homemaker, former employee of Blue Bell in Amory and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a son, Jerry Sapoch of Amory; step-daughters, Susan Maness of Amory and Linda Quinton of Gaffney; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four brothers, W.C. Davis, Jack Davis, Claude E. Davis and Thomas Davis, all of Blacksburg; and three sisters, Vera Brown of Salisbury, Md., Doris Ham of Blacksburg and Carolyn Wright of Blacksburg.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Frederick Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Jeff Davis.
Pallbearers will be Mickey Walker, Michael Walker, Roger Wright, Brandon Jaynes, Alton Davis and Michael W. Davis II.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and other times will be at their respective homes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Mississippi Medical Center, Cancer Unit, Tupelo, Miss. 38801.

Viola Eagle
Services for Viola Louise Eagle, 59, of 116 South View Dr., will be held today at 4 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel conducted by the Rev. James Holder. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-4 p.m. prior to the service.
Mrs. Eagle died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Surviving are a daughter, Dawn Phillips of Gaffney; three sons, Roy Eagle of Gaffney, Sam Eagle of Pacolet and Henry Eagle of Pennsylvania; a brother, Harold Sonny Spencer; two sisters, Letha Harbit and Ida Hewit; and 10 grandchildren.

R. Bryant Patterson
BLACKSBURG – Services for R. Bryant Patterson, 84, of 106 Plonk St., were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel conducted by the Rev. Tim Knotts.
Mr. Patterson died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Surviving are a daughter, Pat P. Greene of Gaffney; a son, Gary G. Patterson of Blacksburg; a grandson, Chris Patterson, who was raised in the home, and three additional grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren, and four step- great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alyne p. Wisher of Blacksburg and Dorothy P. Greene of Lenoir, N.C.
The family is at the home of Jimmy Foster, 982 Batchelor Dr., Blacksburg.

Leroy Young
Services for Leroy Young, 71, of 1285 S. Green River Rd., will be held today at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel conducted by the Revs. Clifford Phillips and Brian Harris. Burial with military honors will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Gail Smith Young, are two sons, Steve Young and Mark Young of Gaffney; a sister, Guynell Smith of Gaffney; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Young was preceded in death by a son, Champ Young.
The family is at the home of Mark and Michelle Young, 1303 S. Green River Rd.
