Lila D. Higgins
Cherokee County native
Lila Dobbins Higgins, 89, of 1108 S. Petty St., died today, March 30, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the wife of G.L. Higgins and daughter of the late Ed Dobbins and the late Ida Hill Dobbins. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Alice Higgins of Gaffney and Ed and Linda Higgins of Sanford, N.C.; a granddaughter, Gwen Higgins of Chapel Hill, H.C.; and several nephews.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Joel Sellers.
The family is at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 200 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340; or to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, S.C. 29342.
Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Flora E. White
Cherokee County native
BLACKSBURG – Flora Ellis White of 504 W. Cherokee St., died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of Hunter White and daughter of the late Marion Lamar and Katie Broom Ellis.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty W. Peterson of Blacksburg; three brothers, Marvin Ellis of Gaffney, Fred Ellis of Cowpens and W.T. Ellis of Salisbury, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy E. Moore of Gaffney; and one granddaughter.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. White was preceded in death by a son, James G. “Joe” White.
Visitation and service times will be announced later by White Columns-Blacksburg.

James W. Tate
Cherokee County native; retired from Ohio Turnpike
James Wardell “Rusty” Tate, 61, of 100 52nd St., Cleveland, Ohio, husband of Naomi Tate, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in Euclid Hospital, Cleveland.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Deacon Wardell Tate and the late Rachel H. Tate. He was a retired employee of Ohio Turnpike and was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Sheila T. Ratchford of Gaffney and Michelle T. McCoy of Cleveland, Ohio; three sons, Daryl Fowler of Shelby, James W. Tate Jr. and Roger D. Tate of Cleveland; a step-daughter, Tina Reddick of Cleveland; two stepsons, Lawrence Brown of Japan and Corey Brown of Ft. Benning, Ga.; five sisters, Genell Mayes, Bernell Tate and Ruth Huskey, all of Gaffney, Sarah L. Smith of Cleveland and Minnie Gregory of Shelby; four brothers, John D. Tate, Joe Louis Tate, Charles Tate and Victor Tate, all of Gaffney; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a half-brother, Douglas Littlejohn of Gaffney.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Tabor Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Darrell W. Smith. Burial will be in Mount Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers and flower bearers will be his nephews and nieces, respectively.
Foster Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Medora G. Bonner
Retired clerk from Cherokee Courthouse
Medora Gaston Bonner, 78, of 1812 N. Limestone St., died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Blacksburg, she was the widow of Hilliard T. Bonner and daughter of the late David Andrew Gaston and the late Alice Lee McConnell Gaston. She was a member of West End Baptist Church and retired as a clerk from the Cherokee County Court House. She attended Limestone College.
Surviving are a daughter, Myrtle Moss; a sister, Mary Lee Middleton of Gaffney; a brother, Robert Gaston of Hickory, N.C.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bonner was preceded in death by a son, David Hilliard Bonner; a sister, Elizabeth Gaston; and a brother, William Gaston.
Graveside services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Sidney Norton. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
The family is at 126 Camelot Dr., Gaffney.
