Verdell D. Phillips
Cherokee County native
Verdell Dawkins Phillips, 55, of 805 Anthony St., wife of Jimmy L. Phillips, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at 2:58 p.m. in Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of Ruth D. Dawkins of Gaffney and the late Monroe Dawkins. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and served as a member of the Adult Choir, the Usher Board, the YWA’s and the Pastor’s Appreciation Committee. She was a housewife.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Douglas Dawkins and Michael Dawkins of Gaffney; four daughters, Vickie McKinney, Charlene Brown, Charlotte Wade and Carla Phillips of Gaffney; two brothers, Conell Dawkins of Gaffney and Leonard Dawkins of Blacksburg; five sisters, Mildred Williams of Flint, Mich., Betty Sue Dawkins, Bontee Davis, Elaine Montgomery and Elizabeth Jefferies of Gaffney; six grandchildren, one of whom, Alexis Phillips of the home, she reared as a daughter.
Services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. A.L. Brackett, Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr. and the Revs. James W. Richards and Tony Macomson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Charles Palmer, Spencer Humphries, Ron Johnson, Corneilus Littlejohn, Frankie Tate and Kalvin Crate.
Honorary pallbearers will be Clint Rodgers Jr., Joe Barnes, Lee Jefferies, Joe Littlejohn and Victor McDowell.
Flower bearers will be Jackie Hogue, Robin McDowell, Selena Haney, Nanice Robinson, Lenora Littlejohn, Toni Montgomery, Elnora Littlejohn, Pauline Wilkie, Mottina Wilson, Johnny Ethel Thomas and Cecila Jefferies.
Honorary flower bearers will be members of the Mount Zion Adult Choir.
Foster Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Johnsie B. Garner
Gaston County, N.C., native
Johnsie Bell Garner, 81, of 1768 Ford Rd., died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaston County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Van David and Almedia Queen Smith. She attended Blacksburg Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Garner of the home; a son, Robert “Bud” Garner of Gaffney; a stepson, Gayland Garner of Gaffney; two daughters, Jennie Painter and Cheryl Putnam, both of Gaffney; a stepdaughter, Ann Shelton of Blacksburg; a brother, Robert Smith of Fort Mill; a sister, Mamie Hughes of Clover; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchldren.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Blacksburg Church of God conducted by the Rev. James Clark. Burial will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-7:30 at White Columns Funeral Home in Blacksburg and other times will be at the home.

Lula Mae Sims
Services for Lula Mae Sims, 69, of 1468 5th Ave., New York City, N.Y., widow of Abarham Sims, will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home with the Rev. Anitonette Garnder officiating. Burial will be in Zoel A.ME. Zion Church Cemetery at Kings Creek.
Pallbearers and flower bearers will be friends of the family.
Foster Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Erna Mae Pettit
Georgia native
Erna Mae Hooper Pettit, 82, of 1727 Twin Bridge Rd., died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.
A native of Georgia, she was the wife of John C. Pettit Jr. and daughter of the late Guy Hooper and the late Maggie Hooper. She was a retired textile employee and a member of New Heights Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a stepson, Bobby Pettit of Gaffney; stepdaughters, Vera Holler, Martha Crawford and Etula White, all of Gaffney; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Pettit was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Haile.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at New Heights Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Sidney Norton. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
The family is at the residence and will receive friends tonight from 7-8 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home.
