Sammie R. Falls
Mother of Gaffney resident
Sammie Rambin Shipman Falls, 80, of Mansfield, La., died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Shreveport, La.
Born in Pelican, La., she was a housewife and was preceded in death by her husband, SMSgt. George T. Shipman Sr. Prior to settling in Mansfield, she traveled with her husband and their five children for 20-plus years in the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are two sons, George T. Shipman Jr. and Randy M. Shipman, both of Mansfield; three daughters, Sandra Shipman Fuller of Amarillo, Tex., Brenda Shipman Earls of Gaffney and Paula Shipman Harrington of Nantachie Lake, La.; five sisters, Jeanine Chamberlin of Rambin, Nell Rambin Clark of Natchitoches, La., Mamie Rambin Calmes of Mississippi, Remona Guillory of Lafayette, La., and Jenny McWhiney of Shreveport, La.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rambin conducted by Father Philip F. Michiels. Burial will be in Rambin Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Randy Shipman, George T. Shipman Jr., Phil Harrington, Seth Harrington, Jason Atwood and Donald Ivey.

Robert C. Corbett
Retired fireman
Robert Carroll Corbett, 82, of 800 Thompson St., died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at his home
Born in Aiken, he was the husband of Louise Addis Corbett and son of the late Charlie Corbett and the late Rosalee Tindall Corbett. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church and a retired fireman from the Gaffney Fire Department. He was a veteran and Mason.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters, Carolyn Corbett Johnson of Dallas, Tex., Shelia Corbett Cole of Gaffney, Jill Corbett Brown of Columbia and Sherrie Kim Corbett of the home; two sons, Bobby Eugene Corbett and Billy Lee Corbett, both of Gaffney; six brothers, Francis Corbett, Bobby Corbett, Tillman Corbett, Wendall Corbett, Jimmy Corbett and Ricky Corbett, all of Aiken; two sisters, Lillie Belle Corbett and Charlene Corbett, both of Aiken; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren
Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. John Goforth and Harry Crosby. Burial was in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Jeff Cole, Patrick Corbett, Kevin Corbett, Eric Johnson, Jason Brown and Brian Phillips.
The family is at the residence.

Brenda W. Painter
Cook at Mike’s Corner
Brenda Kay Williams Painter, 34, of 1736 Blacksburg Hwy., Unit No. 2, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at her home.
Born in Gaffney, she was the wife of Randy Painter Sr. and daughter of the late Robert Oliver Williams and the late Mildred Louise McCombs Williams. She was a cook for Mike’s Corner and a member of Freedom Fellowship Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a son, Randy Dale Painter Jr. of the home; two daughters, Crystall Dianne Painter and Chasity Nicole Painter, both of the home; two brothers, Robert Edward Williams Sr. and Bobby Joe Williams, both of Camden; and four sisters, Esther Hill of Liberty, Betty Jo Putman, Linda Faye Huitt and Mary Jane Rhoades, all of Gaffney.
Services will be held today at 4 p.m. at Freedom Fellowship Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Terrell Dillingham and Gregg Martin. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Dale Painter, Tim Wilkie, David Huitt, Ray Penson, Ian Moseley and Mike Putnam.
The family is at 919 9th St., Gaffney.

Sara B. Whelchel
Retired from Musgrove Mill
Sara Bratton Whelchel, 68, of 170 Ross HIll Rd., died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the wife of Harry Mitt Whelchel and daughter of the late Lionel Roosevelt Bratton and the late Ruth Louise Spencer Bratton. She was retired from Musgrove Mill and was a member of Midway Baptist Church.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mitzi Ellis and Tammy Fowler, both of Gaffney; two sons, Jimmy Whelchel and Tommy Whelchel, both of Gaffney; a brother, Ross Bratton of Gaffney; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Whelchel was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Danny Emory. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be deacons of Midway Baptist Church: Ed Patterson, Paul Patterson, Jeff Whelchel, Horace Whelchel, David Martin and Richard Jones.
The family is at the residence.

Sadie C. McLean
Retired school teacher
Sadie C. McLean, 101, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Sardis Oaks, Charlotte.
Mrs. McLean was born in Genoa, Fla., graduated from Valdosta State University in Georgia. She and her late husband, H. Raymond McLean, were married in 1927. She taught school in Hoke County for 15 years and was an active member of Raeford Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and youth advisor, a leader in the Women of the Church, and a choir member for 53 years.
Mrs. McLean was active in community organizations in Raeford, including the Woman’s Club, Chaminade Music Club and Hoke County Retired Teachers Association. She was honored as Hoke County Mother of the Year in 1965. She moved to Charlotte in 1993 and lived at Wilora Lake Lodge, Brighton Gardens and Sardis Oaks.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Hazel and Dr. John Hubbard of Gaffney, Mary and Wyatt Aiken Jr. of Morganton, N.C., and Betty and Stuart A. Ritchie of Harrisburg, N.C.; five grandchildren, Harry M. Lovelace of Gaffney, David Wyatt Aiken III of Graham, N.C., Alexander McLean Ritchie of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., John V.C. Ritchie of Frisco, Tex., and Mary Loyd Lovelace Lowrey of Starkville, Miss; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren, Nancy Andrews of Richmond, Va., and Douglas Hubbard of Gaffney.
Services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Raeford Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Kevin Campbell. Burial will be in Raeford cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the church.
Pallbearers will be L.S. Brock, Benny McLeod, Duncan McFadyen, Dale Teal, Lawrence McNeill and Lauchlin MacDonald.

Frances B. Owens
Retired textile employee
BLACKSBURG – Frances Erline Byars Owens, 75, of 910 Cherokee Falls Rd., died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at her home.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of George Owens and daughter of the late Claude Byars and the late Clara Hughey Byars. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Christian Fellowship Church.
Surviving are a son, Jerry Wayne Owens of Toledo, Ohio; a daughter, Janet Wyatt of Shelby; two sisters, Betty Lou Smiley and Maxine Mullins, both of Gaffney; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Draytonville Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Willie Lanier.
Pallbearers will be Paul Bears, Jody Owens, Jeff Owens, Carl Lee Burnett, Jeff Upchurch, Jody Upchurch and Chris Upchurch.
There will be no visitation. The family is at the residence.
