John V. Cooper
Retired carpenter
John Verdie “J.V.” Cooper, 89, of 215 Chestnut Ridge Rd., died Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of Frances Bolling Ellison Cooper and widower of Violet Millwood Cooper and Tina Painter Cooper. He was the son of the late John M. Cooper and the late Verdie Scruggs Cooper. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Jay Cooper and Donnie Cooper, both of Gaffney; a daughter, Grace Cooper Reynolds Perkett of Gaffney; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Steve Ellison of Gaffney and John Ellison of Prosperity; three step-daughters, Cindy Mace, Kathy Lindler, both of Prosperity, and Linda Mace of Gaffney; 12 step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first and second wives and his parents, Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by two sons, Harold H. Cooper and Charles D. Cooper.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. William Lutz and Jack Bratton. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of Margaret Cooper, 313 Chestnut Ridge Rd.
Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, S.C. 29342, and to Bethany Baptist Church, P.O. Box 698, Gaffney, S.C. 29341.

Gunter W. Werner
Gunter W. Werner, 80, of 137-A Arthur Dr., died Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Arrangements are incomplete. White Columns of Gaffney is in charge.
Larry G. Higgins
Services for Larry Gene Higgins, 43, of 305 Jackson St., were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dean Painter. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gene scates, Mark McBee, Scott McBee, Gary Jones, Timmy Williams and Darrell McGowans.
The family is at 246 Patrick Rd.

Gary T. Wyatt
Employed by Copeland Ind.
SHELBY – Gary Todd “Toby” Wyatt, 34, of 3710 Robert Ridings Rd., died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at his home.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son and stepson of Frances Mullinax Bowen and Ben Bowen of Shelby and son of the late Gary Lee Wyatt. He was employed in line assembly by Copeland Industries and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Gaffney.
Also surviving are a sister, Loretta Dawn Mathis of Gaffney; a step-sister, Tammy Walker of Shelby; maternal grandmother, Louise Mullinax of Gaffney; and paternal grandparents, Luther and Ruth Wyatt of Cowpens.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Kimberly Lee Wyatt Coyle.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel, conducted by the Reb. Ken Pruitt. Burial will be in Frederick Memorials Gardens in Gaffney.
Memorials may be made to Beaver Dam Baptist Church Building Fund, 123 Beaver Dam Church Rd., Shelby, N.C. 28152.
The family is at the residence.

Woodrow McAbee
Retired textile employee
Woodrow McAbee, 85, of 1109 El Bethel Rd., died Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, he was the widower of Lorene Phillips McAbee and son of the late Smith Roland McAbee and the late Cora Gibson McAbee. He was a retired textile employee and a member of El Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen McAbee Allen of Gaffney; a son, Phillip G. McAbee of Gaffney; two sisters, Lula Johnson and Gaynell Millwood, both of Gaffney; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at El Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Perry Jr. and Billy Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Jack McAbee, Don Phillips, Ken Gallman, Devona Gallman, Ray Johnson and Kenny Millwood.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of Karen Allen, 1093 El Bethel Rd.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Gladys Whittenburg
Gaffney native
Gladys Whittenburg, 73, of 227 Klaus St., Beckley, W.Va., died Saturday, March 23, 2002, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.
A native of Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Walter (Sank) Whittenburg and the late Lila Whittenburg. She was a retired employee of Hotel Beckley.
Surviving are six daughters, Brenda Halsley of Gaffney, Christine Galmon of Chester, Gloria Ricks, Judy K. Patterson, Dianna Johnson and Lisa Whittenburg of Beckley; five sons, Francis Whittenburg of Gaffney, Pedro Whittenburg of Atlanta, Leon Whittenburg, Nick Whittenburg and Roy Whittenburg of Beckley; two brothers, Douglas Whittenburg and the Rev. Lucious Whittenburg of Gaffney; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday in Beckley.
