Vernie Powell
Cherokee County native
Vernie Keller Powell, 96, of 909 Green River Rd. in Gaffney, died Monday, May 27, 2002 at the Peachtree Centre.
She was the wife of the late Jesse L. Powell
A native of Cherokee Co., she was the daughter of the late Elbert Keller and the late Essie Bridges Keller.
She was a homemaker and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
She is survived by five sons, Hamon Powell, Samuel Powell and Ray Powell of Gaffney, Bobby Powell of Chesnee, and Wallace Powell of Cowpens; five daughters, Mildred Humphries Smith of Great Falls, Irene Addis of Greenville, Margaret Brown of Piney Creek, N.C., Elizabeth Phillips of Cowpens, and Ester Truluck and Gail George, both of Gaffney; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. May 29 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home in Gaffney.
Services will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 30 at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Duvall officiating. Body will lie instate 30 minutes prior to service.
Pallbearers will be: Michael Addis, Douglas George Jr., Scott Blanton, Sammy Powell Jr., Scott Powell, Donnie Humphries, Gregory Brown, Michael Powell, Don Truluck and Tony Powell.
The family is at the residence.

Sarah Bonner
Retired teacher
Sarah Price Goforth Bonner, 80, of 973 Old Post Rd. in Gaffney and 726 Peach Shed Rd. in Chesnee, died Sunday, May 26, 2002 at Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg.
She was the wife of Thomas Wilton Bonner of the home and the late Grable W. Goforth.
A native of Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late D. Frank Price and the late Polly Sparks Price.
She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, a retired teacher for Cherokee Co. School District 1, and a volunteer at Upstate Carolina Medical Center for a number of years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sandra Kay Jackson of Gaffney; a stepdaughter, Flora B. Powell of Gaffney; a brother, William "Buck" Price of Gaffney; four sisters, Barbara Worrall of Jeffersonville, Ind. and Elizabeth Delasmet, Rebecca Blanton and Brenda Vassy, all of Gaffney; a grandchild, Greg Jackson of Charleston; and two step-grandchildren, D. Brian Powell of Atlanta and Jennifer Heffen Trager of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. May 29 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Drs. Terry Duvall, Herbert Garrett Jr. and Martha Price McKeon officiating. Burial will follow in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be: Joe C. Greene, Mark Vassy, Bill Price, Barry Humphries, Frank Price, Randy Bonner, Berry Hughey, Chip Tucker and Steve Goforth.
The family is at the home.

Bernice Patterson
Cherokee County native
Bernice Bright Patterson, 73, of 207 Roberts St. in Blacksburg, died Friday, May 24, 2002 at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
She was the wife of the late Charlie Lee Patterson.
A native of Cherokee Co., she was the daughter of the late Jay and Beulah Painter Bright.
She was a member of Christian Fellowship Church and retired from Burlington Industries.
She is survived by a son, Steve Patterson of Macon, Ga.; three daughters, Linda Ray Bolin of Hopkins, and Virginia Mullinax and Rita Ann Hambright, both of Blacksburg; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyd and Thurman Bright; and a sister, Dorothy Bright.
Services were held at 3 p.m. on May 26 at Cherokee Falls Baptist Church with the Revs. Joseph Clayton, Gregg Marin and Willie Lanier officiating. Burial followed in Clingman Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers were: Lucky Earls and Dennis Hardin; and grandsons Jimmy Bolin, Chuck Bolin, Mike Bolin, Eddie Mullinax, Brian Mullinax and Joyle Patterson Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were: Taylor Calhoun and Ryan Mullinax.
The family is at the home.

Mildred Stewart
Cherokee County native
Mildred White Stewart, 80, of 101 Calles St. in Blacksburg, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney.
She was the widow of Basil Stewart.
A native of Cherokee Co., she was the daughter of the late Gill and Bertha Cooper White.
She was a member of Broad River Baptist Church. She was a clerk for many years at Emory's 5 & 10 and Ben Franklin's.
She is survived by three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Basil Gary Stewart.
Graveside services were held May 28.
White Columns-Blacksburg is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth White
Ruth Broome White, 75, of 408 Kraft St. in Gaffney, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
She was the wife of James Edgar White, of the home.
A native of Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Carl Broome and the late Pansy Broome.
She was an employee of Hamrick's and a member of New Harvest Church of God.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Jimmy White of Gaffney, and Rev. Rodney White of Dillon; two brothers, Leon Broome and Ricky Broome, both of Gaffney; a sister, Brenda Bolton of Gaffney; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be held May 20 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home in Gaffney.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. on May 30 at New Harvest Church of God, with Rev. Robert Wells officiating. Body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior.
The family is at the residence.

Lillie Tate
Pastor of Mount Oliver Baptist
Rev. Lillie S. Tate, 59, wife of Luther R. Tate of 256 Little Hope Rd. in Blacksburg, died at 9:45 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2002.
A native of Cherokee Co., she was the daughter of Eunice Littlejohn Smith and the late K.B. Smith. She was the pastor of Mount Oliver Baptist Church in Gaffney. She was also a real estate booker at Kosa, a nurse and co-owner of L.L. Realty, Inc. She was a former chairperson of the Cherokee County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, a member of Theta Beta Gammon Sorority and a former president of the S.C. state Y.W.A.s and the Thickety Mountain Y.W.A.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Lutina Tate of the home; a mother, Eunice L. Smith of Gaffney; a sister, Fannie Mae Rodgers of Dallas, Texas; and five brothers, M.B. Smith, Curtis Smith, Lawrence Smith, Kurt Littlejohn and Joseph Littlejohn of Gaffney.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. May 30 at Mount Oliver Baptist Church, 219 Told Mine Springs Rd.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on May 31 at Limestone Missionary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Darryl Smith, Clarence Davis, Marvin Tate, Judy Dover, Anoinette Gardner and J.W. Richard officiating.
Burial will follow in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery. Flower Bearers will be: her nieces and Mrs. Mickey Corry. Honorary flower bearers will be Whittaker Chapter No. 127, Order of the Eastern Stars. Pallbearers will be her nephews. Honorary pall bearers will be the ministers. The body will be placed in the church at noon, prior to services.

Wilbert Moore
Funeral services for Wilbert "Mote Contol" Moore, of 506 Marion Ave. in Gaffney, are incomplete but will be announced later by Foster Funeral Home of Gaffney.
A native of W. Va., he died May 23, 2002 in the Heritage Way Nursing Home of Hendersonville, N.C.

Hattie Lockhart
Funeral services for Hattie Lockhart, 95, formerly of 924 W. Rutledge Ave. in Gaffney, will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 29, 2002 at Foster Funeral Home in Gaffney, with Evangelist Aaron Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in Limestone Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Willie James Boyd, Scott Wilkins, Aaron Littlejohn, Lemuel Boyce, Lewis Dawkins and Andrea Grey.

Dorothy Morris
Cherokee County native
Dorothy Morris, 46, of 113 Conner Dr. in Gaffney, died at 8:55 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2002 at Peachtree Centre in Gaffney.
A native of Cherokee Co., she was the daughter of Lucille Phillips Morris and the late Remus Morris.
She was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by five sisters, Mammie Lee Smith, Wendy Gean Wilson of Union, Jessie Mae Worthy, Sylvia Crosby, and Gloria Morris of Gaffney; three brothers, Raymond Jr. Morris, James Lewis Morris and John Wayne Morris of Gaffney.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. May 30 at Bethel Baptist Church, with Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr. officiating. Body will lie instate at Bethel Baptist Church at 2 p.m. prior to services. Burial will follow in Mount Sinai Baptist Church Cemetery.
Flower bearers will be: Teresa Young, Betty Joe Wilson, Sandra Martin, Kathy Sims, Joann Hughes, Robin Wood and Kathy Galmon. Pallbearers will be: Charles Dawkins, Forest Hollis, Ronald Hollis, Johnny Grant, Howard Camp and Wilbert Phillips.
The family is at the home of her sister, Mrs. Jessie Worthy, 402 Elm St. in Gaffney.
