David L. Hambright
Former construction worker
BLACKSBURG – David Lee Hambright, 28, of 167 Hughey Lake Rd., died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of Traci Loving Hambright and son of Sam Hambright and Peggy Mayfield Camp. He graduated from Gaffney High School and was a former construction worker. A veteran, he was a member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church and the Gold Wing Road Riders Association.
Surviving are his wife, Traci Loving Hambright of Gaffney; a son, Devin Hambright of Gaffney; father and stepmother, Sam and Dana Hambright of Gaffney; mother and stepfather, Peggy and Donnie Camp of Shelby; a brother, Jerry Hambright of Gaffney; and nieces raised in the home, Breanna Hames and Madilyn Hames, both of the home.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Tommy Wright and Carroll Caldwell. Burial will be in Mt. Ararat Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Gary Frazier Jr., Bobby McIntire, Danny Cody, Roger Kiekendall, Mark Sanders, Danny Loving and Joey Hambright.
Honorary pallbearers will be Devin Hambright and members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times will be at 1034 Pacolet Hwy., Lot 11, Gaffney, and 730 Whites Rd., Gaffney.

John E. Godfrey Sr.
Retired from Eastern Airlines
John E. Godfrey Sr., 84, of 101 Sunset Dr., died Thursday, May 30, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of Evelyn Smith Godfrey of the home and son of the late John W. Godfrey and the late Willie Miller Godfrey. He was a retired air freight manager for Eastern Airlines after 33 years of service and was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, John E. Godfrey Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., Steven J. Godfrey of Seneca and David Bruce Godfrey of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Bryan McEachern of Charlotte and Haley Godfrey of Seneca.
The family is at the residence.
Arrangements are incomplete. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.

Lillie S. Tate
BLACKSBURG – Services for the Rev. Lillie Smith Tate, 58, of 256 Little Hope Rd., will be held today at 1 p.m. at Limestone Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Darryl Smith, Clarence Davis, Marvin Tate, Judy Dover, Antoinette Gardner and J.W. Richard. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at noon.
Arrangements by Foster Funeral Home.

Chris C. Merrell
Retired security guard
BLACKSBURG – Chris Connell Merrell, 66, of 429 Old Chester Rd., died Thursday, May 30, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Brevard, N.C., he was the husband of Lucille Reep Merrell of the home and son of the late Gillard Merrell and the late Sue Anna Merrell. He was a retired security guard and a member of Little River (N.C.) Baptist Church.
Also surviving are five sons, Jerry Sain of Penrose, N.C., Connell James Merrell, Benjamine A. Merrell, Christopher T. Merrell and Michael D. Merrell, all of Blacksburg; a stepson, Robert Lewis Humphries of Blacksburg; three daughters, Brenda Sue O’Shields of Easley, Billie Duff and Bobbie Chandler, both of Blacksburg; a stepdaughter, Penny Moss of Atlanta; three brothers, Carrol Merrell of Penrose, N.C., Ansel Merrell of Little River, N.C., and Glen J. Merrell of Easley; a sister, Brenda Karr of Liberty; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Merrell was preceded in death by his brothers, Emerson Merrell, Theadore Merrell, Junior Merrell and J.B. Merrell, and a daughter, Corrine Chandler.
The family is at the residence.

Carolyn L. Hayes
Private duty Alzheimer’s caregiver
SHELBY – Carolyn Lovelace Hayes, 68, of Century Care of Shelby, formerly of 1121 Scottsdale Dr., died Thursday, May 30, 3002, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Edgar Monroe Lovelace and the late Iva Jeanette Gibson. She was a private duty caregiver for Alzheimer's patients.
Surviving are three daughters, Cathy Lazenby of Shelby, Sandy Robinson Rogers of Florida and Sylvia Bowman of Shelby; a brother, Phil Lovelace of Shelby; three grandchildren, Derek Bowman and Millie Rogers, both of Shelby, and Mark Lazenby of Louisville, Ky.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Robinson.
Graveside services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Earl, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Allen Davis.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary, 400 W. Carolina St., Blacksburg, and at other times will be at the home of her daughter, Cathy Lazenby, 1604 Mountain Lane, Shelby.
Arrangements by Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia.
Wilbert Moore
Services for Wilbert Moore of 506 Marion Ave., formerly of Washington, D.C., will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Mary D. Jefferies and Lawrence Davidson, Dr. Bucannon and Rev. Lindsey.
