Helen S. Martin
Native of Batesburg
Helen Sheppard Martin, 74, formerly of 328 Holly Ave., Goose Creek, died Friday, June 28, 2002, in Peachtree Centre.
Born in Batesburg, she was the wife of Marquis Martin of the home and daughter of the late James Sheppard and the late Bertha Fox Sheppard. She was a retired salesperson and was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as past worthy matron of Goose Creek Masonic Lodge 401.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Dean Hallman of Atlanta, Ga., Steve Martin of Columbia and Darron Martin of Charlotte; a sister, Hazel S. Rhodes of Batesburg; a brother, Lewis Sheppard of Batesburg; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Joyce Murphy.
The family is at the respective homes.

Theola S. Smith
Former president of Sharon First National Bank
BLACKSBURG – Theola Brooks Street Smith, 80, of 218 Caldwell Rd., died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Sharon, she was the widow of Miles Elbert Smith and daughter of the late Langley Calhoun Street and the late Wren Hudson Street. She was a member of Canaan United Methodist Church and a graduate of Spartanburg Junior College. She was a retired president of the First National Bank of Sharon. During the time of her service as the bank’s president, there were only seven women in the nation who were presidents of a national bank.
Surviving are a sister, Margaret Street Wilson of Lowrys, S.C.; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Canaan United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Charles Phillips.
Pallbearers will be Peter Wilson, Chris Faulkner, John Golden, Jeb Wilson, Ricky Powers and Rob Faulkner.
The family is at the respective homes.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 601 Colonial Ave., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.

Ruth M. Helms
Retired from Western Electric
CHARLOTTE – Ruth Jeanette Mical Helms, 75, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in the Harris Hospice Unit.
Mrs. Helms was born Oct. 5, 1926, in Pageland, a daughter of the late Junior Mical and Beulah Pressley Mical. She worked at Kennington Drug Store during World War II and later at S&W Cafeteria and at Chadbourn Hoisery Mill for 15 years. She retired from Western Electric after more than 20 years of service. Mrs. Helms was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
Services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Hudson Chapel of Northside Baptist Church. Burial will be in Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Surviving are her children, Jimmy Helms of Blacksburg, Sylvia Reese of Myrtle Beach, Nolan Helms of Albermarle, N.C., and Rose Marie Oehler of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Conner of Charlotte, Ema Gainey of South Boston, Va., and Betty Wilson of Davidson, N.C.; two brothers, Ed Mical of Dumfries, Va., and Jack Mical of Shallotte, N.C.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Helms was preceded in death by her husband, James Hubert Helms, in 1975 and two brothers, Harold Mical and Zony Mical.
Memorials may be made to the Harris Hospice Foundation, c/o Presbyterian Hospital, 200 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, N.C. 28207.

Rosa L. Evans
Homemaker
SPARTANBURG – Rosa Lee Evans, 80, of Mt. View Nursing Home died Friday, June 28, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare.
Born in Gaffney, she was the widow of R.J. Evans and daughter of the late Sam B. Lee and the late Susan Katherine Crocker Lee. She was a member of White Plains Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Surviving are two daughters, Rita Mathis of Boiling Springs and Sherry Dale Bowles of Cowpens; four sisters, Daisy Mae Goode of Cowpens, Malissa McKinney of Spartanburg, Ruby Tisdale of Columbia and Eunice Cash of Albany, Ga.; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Carter. Burial was in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Mike Mathis, Raymond McAbee, Rick Bland, Michael Bowles, Sam Goode and Junior Lewis.
The family is at the home of her daughter, Rita Mathis, 830 Belcher Rd., Boiling Springs.

Wilma L. Self
Former employee of Curry Studio
Wilma Laughlin Self, 83, of 704-1/2 Thompson St., died Thursday, June 27, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, she was the widow of Thomas J. Self and was a former employee of Curry Studio. She was a member of Limestone Street United Methodist Church and Queen Esther Chapter 139, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are two daughters, Patty Lippard of Gaffney and Jay Reda of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Jasper L. Laughlin of Gaffney and James Laughlin of California; three sisters, Pauline Thomas of Daytona Beach, Fla., Ann Hull of Chester and Barbara Sansbury of Santee; and two grandchildren, Jason Reda of Columbia and Anna Lippard of Gaffney.
Services were held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joyce Murphy. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joe C. Lippard, Ronald Reda, Jason Reda and Sam Stone.
Memorials may be made to Limestone Street United Methodist Church, 910 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
The family is at the residence.

Jack S. Epley
Retired from United Cities Gas Company
Jack Sewell Epley, 75, of 129 Cooper St., died today, July 1, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Marion, N.C., he was the husband of Elaine Faircloth Epley and son of the late John Lee Epley and the late Rena Hemphill Epley. He was retired from United Cities Gas Company and was a member of Beech Street Presbyterian Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sisters, Katherin E. Price of Duncan and Lois E. Christopher Lucas of Gaffney.
Arrangements are incomplete.
