Samuel Knuckles Sr.
Retired custodian of West End Baptist Church
Samuel Knuckles Sr., 94, of 611 Kendrick St., died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at his home.
Husband of Priscilla Mack Knuckles, he was born in Cherokee County, a son of the late Agnes Knuckles. He was raised by his grandparents, the late Rev. Isaiah Knuckles and the late Elizabeth Knuckles.
Mr. Knuckles was a member and trustee of Mikes Creek Baptist Church and was a retired custodian of West End Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Samuel Knuckles Jr., Cossie Knuckles and Mack Knuckles, all of Gaffney; six daughters, Blanche Proctor, Delia Ballard, Juanita Richardson, Dorothy Tate and Nelleree Hardy, all of Gaffney, Barbara Johnson of Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Nellie Peterson of Gaffney and Nena Garrett of Salisbury, N.C.; 29 grandchildren, including four reared in the home, Mary Kay Hopper of St. Paul, Minn., Kenneth Knuckles, Robin Allen of Gaffney and Ray Knuckles of Atlanta, Ga.; 45 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mikes Creek Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. S.M. Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Billy Dean Deal
Granard High graduate
Billy Dean Deal, 55, of 213 Hill St., died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at his residence.
Son of the late Henry Deal and the late Della Simmons Deal, he was a native of Gaffney and a member of Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church. He was a graduate of Granard High School and a member of the Granard High School Marching Band. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving are a daughter, Kim A. Thompson of Gaffney; a brother, Bobby Deal of Stafford, Va.; and two grandsons, Julian Thompson and Justin Thompson of Gaffney.
Arrangements are incomplete. Foster Funeral Home is in charge.

Jessie O. Martin
Services for Jessie O. Martin, 68, of 108 Sycamore, widow of George R. Martin, will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Robert L. Dover and Jennifer Hemphill. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Garden, Anderson.
Arrangements by Foster Funeral Home.
Beulah L. Thomas
Services for Beulah Mae Lipscomb Thomas, 58, of 304 Browning St., will be held today at 2 p.m. at Gowdeysville Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. L.T. Tate, Robert Dover and Pastor Vernell Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

Frances H. Ratchford
Gaffney native
Frances Hicklin Ratchford, 87, of 3908 Bishop Mill Place, Clinton, Md., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, in Southern Maryland Hospital.
Widow of Jack Ratchford, she was born in Gaffney, a daughter of the late Jesse and Cora Young Hicklin. She was a member of Suck Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are three brothers, Samuel Hicklin and James Hicklin, both of Norfolk, Va., the Rev. Thomas Hicklin of Wilmington, Del.; six sisters, Daisy Gray and Annie Martin, both of Spartanburg, Flossie Littlejohn of the home, Dessie Baker, Ella Mae Holmes and Virginia Linder, all of Norfolk.
Services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Buck Shoals Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church Saturday at 2 p.m.
The family is at the home of Daisy Gray, 156 Chester St., Spartanburg, and will receive friends Friday from 7-8 p.m. at The Gilmore Mortuary.
