Era B. Humphries
Cleveland County native
HICKORY GROVE – Era Batchelor Humphries, 92, of 2044 Legion Rd., died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at her residence.
A native of Boiling Springs in Cleveland County, N.C., she was the widow of Clyde Edward Humphries and daughter of the late Dawson W. Batchelor and the late Mattie Vassey Batchelor. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, Clyde Leon Humphries and Dawson Dean Humphries, both of Smyrna; four daughters, Myrtle Louis Childers of Smyrna, Francise Ellen Moss of Hickory Grove, Geneva Alexander of Sharon and Matriel Ramsey of York; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mable Bolin of Asheville, N.C.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Broad River Baptist Church in Smyrna, conducted by the Rev. Dale Welch. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Ramsey, Eddie Ramsey, Dawson Humphries, Charles Humphries, Freddie Alexander and Rocky Moss.
The family is at the residence.
Memorials may be made to the Hickory Grove Fire and Lifesaving, 4009 Wylie Ave., Hickory Grove, S.C. 29717.

Mamie F. Branch
Retired from Clifton Mfg.
SPARTANBURG – Mamie Fowler Millwood Branch, 88, of 851 Old Converse Rd., died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Skylyn Place.
A native of Converse, she was the widow of Clarence Millwood and Wayne D. Branch. She was the daughter of the late Lon and Beulah Bagwell Fowler, a lifelong member of Converse Baptist Church and a retired weaver from Clifton Manufacturing Company.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Roy A. and Mattha Millwood of Gaffney; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Jack Weaver. The family will receive friends following the service.
Mrs. Branch will lie in state today at the funeral chapel between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The family is at the residence, 851 Old Converse Rd.

Robert E. McElroy Jr.
U.S. Navy veteran
COWPENS – Robert Eugene (Sonny) McElroy Jr., 73, of 125 Robin Rd., died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at his residence.
A native of Houston, Tex., he was the son of the late Robert Eugene McElroy Sr. and the late Mary Elizabeth Alston McElroy. He was a retired U.S. Navy ship swimmer and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW and First Baptist Church North Spartanburg.
Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Patricia McElroy of the home, and two brothers, David E. McElroy and Clifford McElroy, both of Coldspring, Tex.; and a sister-in-law, Dana McElroy of Coldspring, Tex.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McElroy was preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Roland McElroy.

Alice L. Long
Nurse’s aid at Pinedale
Alice Lee Long, 50, of 705 Littlejohn St., died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at 11:33 a.m. in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late John Tate and the late Darlene Houston Tate. She was a nurse’s aid, with her last employment at Pinedale Nursing Home. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, Cowpens, and served as an usher, member of the Mass Choir, the YWA’s, the Pastor’s Aid and the Missionary Society.
Surviving are a daughter, Alice Mae Tate of the home; a stepson, Walter Long Jr. of Spartanburg; three who were reared in her home as sons, Jonathan McNeil, Edward Tate and Vinson Logan of Gaffney; two sisters, Janie T. Davis and Annie Marie Tate, both of Gaffney; four brothers, Sullivan Dean Tate, Bill Tate Jr., Robert Tate, all of Gaffney, and Willie James Tate of Cowpens; and one granddaughter.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. C. Dennis Rector. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The family is at the home of her sister, Janie Davis, 333 Hetty Hill St.

Thomas H. Jolly
Former truck driver
Thomas H. Jolly, 81, of 1434 N. Limestone St., died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at 10:25 p.m. in Peachtree Centre.
Son of the late Golden Jolly and the late Anna Hardy Jolly Alexander, he was a native of Cherokee County and a member of Mikes Creek Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a former truck driver.
Surviving are a nephew, Jimmy Jolly of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a niece, Gloria Jolly of Winston-Salem; and two cousins whom he considered his sisters, Lizzie M. Ross and Lillie E. Jones of the home.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Robert Dover and Michael Bridges. Burial will be in Limestone Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Petty, Lewis Blanton, Larry Jefferies, Paul Gist, Charlie Lipscomb and Raford Peeler.
Flower bearers will be Ruth Phillips, Lottie Mayberry, Christine Ross, Josephine Lyons, Robin Davidson, Shevette Garrett and Juanita Mayberry.

Marilyn Green
Services for Marilyn Marie “Meka” Harris Green, 40, of 1428 Leadmine Rd., will be held today at 4 p.m. at Limestone Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Arthur J. Smith, Van Williams, Roderick Oglesby, Heyward Boyd, Michael Bridges and Dr. J.B. Buchanan. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. and the family will receive friends at 3:30 p.m.
Honorary and active flower bearers and honorary and active pallbearers will be members of the Gaffney High School Class of 1980.
The family is at the home of her mother, Anna Marie Harris, 116 Deal St.

Clifford J. Grubb
Retired textile employee
Clifford Junior Grubb, 82, of 114 1st St., died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at his residence.
A native of Gaffney, he was the widower of Alberta Hallman Grubb and son of the late Tillman Grubb and the late Mary Lowery Grubb. He was a retired textile employee and retired sign foreman for the S.C. Highway Department. He was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Judy Grubb Walsh of Los Angeles, Calif., Patricia Grubb Wright of Shelby and Brenda Gail Grubb Jolly of Greenwood; a son, Clifford Eugene Grubb of Antioch, S.C.; two sisters, Modene Allison and Doris Mathis, both of Gaffney; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Grubb was precede in death by a brother, David Grubb.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Betty Gentry, William Willis and Dr. Clyde Thomas. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Cohey, Lemuel Grubb, Gene Allison, Kevin Jolly, Dale Davis, Kenny Gordon and Gary Moore.
Honorary pallbearer will be Gary Blackwell.
The family is at the residence.

Mildred S. Smith
Cherokee County native
BLACKSBURG – Mildred S. Smith, 92, formerly of 114 Seven Springs St., widow of Deacon Emanuel Smith, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at 9:35 p.m. at Peachtree Centre.
Daughter of the late Robert Smith and the late Charlcie Hopper Smith, she was a native of Cherokee County and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess, member of the Senior Choir, member of the Senior Missionary, Sunday School teacher, active Bible study scholar, past advisor of the Junior Missionary, member of Indian Hill Senior Citizens group, past member of the Willing Workers Club, and a member of Whitaker Chapter No. 127, Order of the Eastern Stars.
Surviving are a sister, Dora Meeks of Gastonia, N.C.; a brother, Fred Smith of Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Van C. Williams, Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr., Dr. Eula Miller Jr. and Elder Eddie Lockhart. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Body will be placed in the church Thursday at 3 p.m. where the family will receive friends and Eastern Stars ceremonies will be held at 3:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be the deacons and trustees of Pine Grove Baptist Church and members of Mt. View Masonic Lodge No. 301.
Flower bearers will be the deaconess of Pine Grove Baptist Church and members of Whitaker Chapter No. 127, Order of the Eastern Stars of Gaffney.
The family is at the home of Kathy Petty, 2303 W. Buford St., Gaffney.
