A.B. Roper
Former owner of Roper Motor Co.
CHESNEE – Arthur Bremond Roper, 91, of 310 E. Cherokee St., husband of Sarah Martin Roper, died Tuesday, Nov, 12, 2002, at his home.
Mr. Roper was born in Henrietta, N.C., on March 30, 1911. He was the son of the late James Robert and Ella Jane McDade Roper. He was the former owner of Roper Motor Company and was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 421. He was a member of Chesnee Masonic Lodge 294 and was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He was a founding member of the Chesnee Shrine Club.
Being a long time advocate of education, Mr. Roper returned to school after his retirement and graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. degree in interdisciplinary studies at the age of 75. He was a former Chesnee Town councilman and was instrumental in the establishment of the Chesnee Library. He was a member of Chesnee First Baptist Church and the Helping Hand Sunday School Class.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sally Roper and Charles Ledford of Chesnee and Rutherfordton, N.C.; a son, Robert Michael Roper of Chesnee; three grandsons; a sister, Christine Dellinger of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Edna Martin and John Holleran of Falmouth, Ky; and a brother and sister-in-law, Joe C. and Carolyn Martin of Federal Way, Wash.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Roxie Roper Newton, and brother, Glenn Roper, both of Gastonia, N.C.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Eggers Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Herbert Garrett and Mr. Allan Hood. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens,
Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302; or to the charity of ones’ choice.
The family is at the home.

Johnny Silvia
Native of Tulsa, Okla.
John (Johnny) Arlie Silvia, 53, formerly of Dallas, Tex., died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in Cody, Wyo.
Born in Tulsa, Okla., he was the son of Fannie Mae Morgan Silvia of Gaffney and the late John Edward Silvia. He was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone, was a veteran and of the Baptist faith.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mieki DeAn Silvia and Michelle Denise Vickery, both of Skiatook, Okla.; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by Dr. Roger Aycock. The family will receive friends from 2:30-3 at the cemetery prior to the service.
The family is at 791 Pleasant School Rd., Gaffney.

Danny C. Clark
Self-employed mechanic
BLACKSBURG – Danny Clyde Clark, 46, of 443 N. Rutherfordton St., died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, N.C., he was the son of Buck F. Clark of the home and Nancy Deaton Borders of Shelby. He was the stepson of the late Ted R. Borders and was a self-employed mechanic.
In addition to his stepfather, he was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Boyce Clark.
Also surviving are a brother, Brian Clark of Blacksburg; two sisters, Elizabeth Clark of Mount Holly, N.C., and Dana Borders of Shelby; three daughters, Nikki Clark, Loni Clark, both of Shelby, and Sandra Clark Hastings of Cherryville, N.C.; two sons, Johnny Clark and Daniel Clark, both of Shelby; and a grandson, John Hastings of Cherryville.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Mickey Hayward and Steve Waters. Burial will be in Patterson Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family is at 821 E. Main St., Shelby.

Nettie G. Welchel
Retired from textiles
Nettie Aline Gregory Welchel, 78, of 222 Splawn Rd., died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.
Born in Union, she was the widow of Roy Welchel and daughter of the late Lewis Gregory and the late Mae Cudd Gregory. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Skull Shoals Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Tommy Welchel, Wendell Welchel and Jimmy Welchel, all of Gaffney; two daughters, Shirley McAbee and Elaine Rogers, both of Gaffney; two brothers, Bobby Gregory and Harold Gene Gregory, both of Gaffney; four sisters, Gladys McAbee, Bessie McCullough, both of Gaffney, Annie Inman and Sarah Brown, both of Union; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Revs. Randy Phillips and Danny Phillips.
Pallbearers will be Roger Mayfield, Wayne Mayfield, Doug Horne, Junior Mullinax, Tommy Spencer and Jim Fagan.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the residence.

Lela C. Fowler
Homemaker
UNA – Lela Camp Fowler, 86, of 1153 Edgewood Ave., died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
She was the widow of William Clifford Fowler and daughter of the late Thomas and Sally Taylor Camp. She was a member of Northside Missionary Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Roberts of Spartanburg; a son, Billy Wayne Fowler of Una; two sisters, Ida Greer and Leda Hardin of Mayo; two brothers, Horace Camp of Mayo and Alton Camp of Spartanburg; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today at Eggers Funeral Home, Chesnee, from noon until 1 p.m. Funeral services follow in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m., conducted by the Revs. Weldon Burnett and Phillips Raines. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Fowler, Darren Roberts, Jonathan Erde, Kevin Deyoung, Harry Kendall, Rick Ellis and Kyle Fowler.
The family is at the residence.

Grace E. Evans
Homemaker
Grace Eggers Evans, 92, of 644 11th St., died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in St. Francis Women’s and Family Hospital, Greenville.
Born in Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Eggers and the late Cora Thompson Eggers. She was a homemaker and member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ruth Lavender of Gaffney and Gail Smith of Greer; a brother, Howard Eggers of Gaffney; a sister, Ruth McDowell of Portsmouth, Va.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are incomplete. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.

Rosa J. Coleman
Services for Rosa Juanita Coleman, 64, of 506 E. Jefferies St., wife of Frank R. Coleman, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Tabor Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Darrell W. Smith, Marvin Tate, Brenda Dawkins and Clifton Harris. Burial ill be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
Pallbearers and flower bearers will be her nephews and nieces.
Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur Guyton, Frank Junior Smith, Richard Rodgers and James Albert Davidson.
Honorary flower bearers will be Aurellia Smith, Allien Graham, Ella Sue Fowler, Ms. Dean Smith and Annette Littlejohn.
