Ernest Buckles Jr.
Brother of Gaffney resident
Ernest E. Buckles Jr., 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in a Florence hospital.
Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Ozelia Baylor Buckles and Ernest E. Buckles Sr. He was a graduate of Williamsburg County schools and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Buckles retired as line crew foreman for Santee Electric Co-op and was a member and former deacon of Midway Presbyterian church. He was a member of Kingstree Masonic Lodge 46, A.F.M., the American Legion and the V.F.W.
Surviving are his wife, Lena Mae Duke Buckles of Kingstree; two sons, Michael Edward Buckles of Surfside Beach and Duke LaFattee Buckles of Kingstree; a daughter, Rita B. McCracken of Florence; three brothers, Pete Buckles and Jack Buckles, both of Columbia, and Carlton Buckles of Hartsville; two sisters, Louise B. Huffstetler of Gaffney and Joyce B. McLaughlin of Charleston; and two grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, Nov. 29, at Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Rodney Foster. Burial was in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

John W. Brannon Sr.
Retired from Dickerson Construction Company
John Willie Brannon Sr., 70, of 406 Peeler St., died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Union County, he was a son of the late Robert and Fannie Brannon and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a retired employee of Dickerson Construction Company.
Surviving are his wife, Lillie Kelly Brannon of Gaffney; two sons, John Willie Brannon Jr. of the home and Melvin Brannon of Gaffney; two daughters, Annie Von Fernanders and Oledia Brannon, both of Gaffney; a sister, Sarah Boyd of Gaffney; three stepsons, Darrell Kelly of New Jersey, Bobby Kelly of Columbia and Eddie Cade of Bennettsville; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr. Burial with military rites will be in Oakland Cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Paul Philbeck
Retired from Universal Compact Disc
BLACKSBURG – Paul Philbeck, 72, of 215 Philbeck Dr., died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Shelby, N.C., he was the husband of Marthell Ellen Swink Philbeck and son of the late Ephrim Mae Philbeck and the late Lonnie Rella Humphries Philbeck. He was retired from Universal Compact Disc in Grover and was a member of New Buffalo Baptist Church in Grover.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Sandra Kay Hedtke of Shelby and Wanda Paulette Bowman of Blacksburg; a brother, Tom Philbeck of Patterson Springs, N.C.; three sisters, Hattie Mae Turner, Ruby Judd, both of Blacksburg, and Oveda Green of Earl; four grandchildren and one grandson.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Philbeck was preceded in death by a granddaughter.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at New Buffalo Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Tony Fulbright and Forrest Ridings. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family is at the residence.

Stephen J. Manfredi
BLACKSBURG – Stephen Joseph Manfredi, 73, of 301 Jumping Branch Rd., died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Arrangements are incomplete. White Columns-Blacksburg is in charge.

Virgie L. Sanders
Retired textile employee
Virgie Lee Sanders, 71, of 302 Grubb St., died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Union, she was the daughter of the late Jimmy Taylor Sanders and the late Mary Louise Helton Sanders. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Grassy Pond Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Jimmy Taylor of Gaffney; three sisters, Mary Lois Sanders of the home, Minnie Geneva Riddle and Gwen Finch Hawkins, both of Gaffney; a brother, Danny K. Helton of Gaffney; and foster children, Shannon Erwin and Scott Wright, both of Gaffney.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James Sanders and Harold Sanders.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Kanipe.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the residence.

Fannie D. Allison
Retired textile employee
Fannie Davis Allison, 95, formerly of 310 Holmes St., died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Peachtree Centre.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of Summie Edward Allison and daughter of the late Alfred Christopher (Allie) Davis and the late Mary Agnes Spencer Davis. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Jehovah Witness Church of Gaffney.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held today at 11:30 a.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, conducted by Albert Stegall and Earl Buckson. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today 30 minutes prior to the service at the church and at other times will be at their respective homes.
Memorials may be made to the Senior Centers of Cherokee County, 499 W. Rutledge Ave., Gaffney, S.C. 29341.

Rebecca L. Edmonds
Homemaker
CHESNEE – Rebecca Loreita Edmonds, 73, of 244 Church Rd., died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Union, she was the wife of H.C. Edmonds and daughter of the late John Wesley Waldrop and Etta Waldrop Edmonds. She was a homemaker and member of Cherokee Springs Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Velma Seay of Inman and Dianne Engelmann of Chesnee; two sons, David Edmonds and Stephen Edmonds, both of Chesnee; two sisters, Reba Lamb of Woodruff and Lois Black of Cowpens; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Cherokee Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bill Lark. The family will receive friends from noon until 1:45 p.m. at the church, just prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the Cherokee Springs Baptist Church, 2699 Chesnee Hwy., Spartanburg, S.C. 29307.
The family is at the home.

Minnie D. Jefferies
Services for Minnie Idella Dawkins Jefferies, 79, of 523 McCluney Dr., will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. A.L. Brackett, Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr., Revs. Mary Jefferies and George Kirby and Pastor Clarence Davis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The body will be taken to the home on McCluney Drive today at 6 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Charles Goodwin, Shannon Goodwin, Tarleton Goodwin, J.B. Houston, Kenneth Jefferies and Terry Jefferies.
Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Flower bearers will be Ateria Goodwin, Vanessa Jefferies, Sylvia Keith, Cletress McGill, Teresa Miller, Luticia Rodgers and Ruthie Rodgers.
Honorary flower bearers will be the Mount Zion Baptist Church Missionary.
Mrs. Jefferies, widow of Deacon Dewey Jefferies Sr., died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at 10:20 a.m. at her residence.
