Mary Wheless
Retired Dean of Students at Limestone College
ANSONVILLE, N.C. – Willa Mary Wheless, 84, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Union Regional Medical Center, Monroe, N.C.
Miss Wheless was born on July 25, 1918, to the late William Andrew and Violet Cagle Wheless in Ansonville. She graduated from Ansonville High School and attended the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Miss Wheless was associated with Pfeiffer College for 19 years in various positions. After she left Pfeiffer, she was Dean of Students at Limestone College in Gaffney until her retirement.
For the last five years, following a major stroke, she had resided at the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Monroe.
Surviving are her sisters, Emma Wheless and Ollie Wheless Brewer, both of Ansonville; a nephew, Conrad Wheless Brewer of Pensacola, Fla; great nephews and nieces, Conrad W. Brewer Jr. of Richmond, Va., Ray C. Brewer of Atlanta, Ga., Nica McAnany of Jacksonville, Fla., Susan B. Bruce of Lookout Mountain, Ga., and Mary E. Maggard of Lexington, KY.; and seven great-great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tyson-Wheless Cemetery, Highway 52, just south of Ansonville.

Guy V. Butler Jr.
Auto mechanic
Guy Vernon Butler Jr., 65, of 2084 Pacolet Hwy., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at his residence.
Born in Kings Mountain, N.C., he was the husband of Sadie Ledbetter Butler and son of the late Guy Vernon Butler Sr. and the late Adeline McGinnis Butler. He was a self-employed auto mechanic.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Cynthia Millen, Crystal Ezell, both of Gaffney, and Debra Ross of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Jeff Butler and Ricky Butler, both of Lincolnton, N.C.; two sisters, Brenda Byrad of Statesville, N.C., and Linda Caldwell of Gastonia; a brother, Bill Butler of Lincolnton; a half-brother, Daniel Butler of Gaffney; and 14 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Butler was preceded in death by a son, Guy Michael Butler.
The family is at the residence.

Kathleen M. Cash
COWPENS – Kathleen “Kitty” Moore Cash, 81, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Cash was the widow of Roy Carlisle Cash.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Brian C. Gilmer. The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside.
Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Salem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 160, Cowpens, S.C. 29330.

George F. Hambright
Retired from ABB
BLACKSBURG – George F. Hambright, 69, of 1139 W. Cherokee St., died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Annie Sue Byrum Hambright of the home and son of the late James Albert and Ora Ann Peeler Hambright. He was a member of Bowling Green (S.C.) Baptist Church and his last pastorate was at Unity Baptist Church in Hickory Grove. Mr. Hambright received a divinity degree from Gardner-Webb University and served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a Mason, past master of Buffalo Lodge No. 202, a Shriner and member of the Hejaz Temple. He was retired from ABB in Kings Mountain.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Jimmy Hambright and wife, Kay, of Blacksburg and Tony Glenn Hambright of Boiling Springs, N.C.; three daughters, Terri Horton and husband, Rodney Bobo Horton, of Grover, Janet Hambright Bradley of Gaffney and Paula Huffman and husband, Nick, of Gastonia; a brother, Davis Hambright of Blacksburg; four sisters, Irene Gold and Pearl Hughey, both of Blacksburg, Artie Owens and Ruth DeStaffno, both of Gaffney; grandchildren, Adam Hambright, Britney Horton, Kayla Horton, Casey Horton, Dylan Owens, Brandi Bradley, Sheldon Lanier, Vicki Lanier, Mark Huffman, and Matthew Huffman and wife, Jennifer; and great-grandchildren, Alea Mullinax, Kaylee Peeler, Alexis Lanier, Tryston Lanier, Austin Huffman and Kailee Huffman.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hambright was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Kirk Hambright, Arron D. Hambright, Ruby Manning and Beatrice Hambright.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at White Columns-Blacksburg and at other times they will be at the home.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Garden Temple Church, conducted by the Revs. David Nichols and Danny Marshburn. Burial will be in Nazareth Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Knox Hambright, Cleve Hambright, Dan Turner, Glenn Childers, Mark Huffman and Hershel Porter.

Shirley P. Glenn
Services for Shirley Peeler Glenn, 55, of 248 Red Barn Rd., Enoree, will be held today at 1 p.m. at Mount Sinai Baptist Church, Spartanburg, conducted by the Rev. Charles Loche Sr. Burial will be in Heritage Memorial Gardens. Body will be placed in the church at noon.

James D. Hodge
Retired from textiles
James D. (Jay Bird) Hodge, 74, of 103 Cedar St., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of Mary Elizabeth McPherson Hodge of the home and son of the late Claude Hodge and the late Belle Abernathy Hodge. He was retired from textiles and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a daughter, Susan Harrill of Gaffney; two sons, James (Jimmy) D. Hodge and Eddie Dean Hodge, both of Gaffney; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family is at 131 Marietta Rd., Apartment 136.

Earl J. Leach
Gaffney native
Earl J. Leach, 71, of 4836 Claire Dr., Oceanside, Calif., husband of Hatsuko Leach, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, after a brief illness.
A native of Gaffney, he was the son of the late Robert Leach and the late Queenie Leach. He was a 1949 graduate of Granard High School and was a member of the famed Granard High School Marching Band. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service. He served his next 20 years and retired as Administrator of Palomor College in Oceanside.
He is also survived by a daughter, Patricia Webb of Oceanside.
Services will be held Monday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church in Oceanside. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4-8 p.m. at the church.

Berthina Boyle
Retired from Minette Mills
Berthina Boyle, 94, of 655 Corinth Rd., died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Brookview HealthCare.
A native of Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Alie Boyle and the late Lou Burgess Boyle. She was retired from Minette Mills and was a member of Buford Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Polly Boyle of the home and Susan B. Spencer of Gaffney; a brother, L. Hall Boyle of Spartanburg; three nieces, Gail Moss of Gaffney, Jane Loyless of Wellford and Lu Anne Stokes of Charlotte; and several great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Miss Boyle was preceded in death by brothers, J. Thomas “Ted” Boyle, Rochelle Boyle and Kye Boyle.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Buford Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Revs. Scott Wachter and Maurice B. Morrow III. Burial will be in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Moss, Pike Moss, Brice Moss, Bill Gibbons, Elmer Chicky and Tim Stokes.
Memorials may be made to Buford Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 120 E. Buford St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
The family is at the residence.
