Ella M. Upchurch
Ella Rae Mullinax Upchurch, 83, of 715 4th St., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of Roscoe Upchurch and daughter of the late Miles Mullinax and the late Sara Scates Mullinax. She was a homemaker and member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Surviving are four sons, Bobby Van Upchurch, William (Buddy) Upchurch, Marshall Upchurch and Harold Dean Upchurch, all of Gaffney; three daughters, Sarah Robbins, Betty Frazier, both of Gaffney, and Sandra Sasser of Monroe, La.; a sister, Aurie McCarter of Gaffney; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Upchurch was preceded in death by two sons, Roscoe Upchurch Jr. and Robert Upchurch.
Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Randy McCraw and Dean Painter. Burial was in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Gene Upchurch, Roscoe Upchurch, Ricky Ellison, Bobby Smith, Ricky Fowler and Leonard Peeler.
The family is at the residence and at their respective homes.

Cozetta L. Byers
Dalton, Ga., native
INMAN – Cozetta Leach Byers, 91, of Magnolia Manor died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Dalton, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Julian William and Maude Cronin Leach. She was retired from Spartan Undies and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Cowpens.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Byers was preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Byers, and a daughter, Vondalese Blackwell.
Surviving are two sons, William L. “Bill” Byers of Mooresboro and David G. Byers of Rutherfordton; three daughters, Juanita Byers and Sadie Byers, both of Spartanburg, and Velvie McCranie of Ellenboro; a brother, Rev. B.W. Leach of Forest City; a sister, Inez Hollifield of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grand-children.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Baptist Church in Harris, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Henry Coley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 12:30-2 p.m. at the church.

Reina G. Caponis
Raised on Catawba Indian Reservation
ROCK HILL – Reina George Caponis, 85, of 434 World Changers Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at her home.
A native of Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late M.J. George and the late Hattie Jane Millins George. Mrs. Caponis was raised on the Catawba Indian Reservation and was the widow of Angelo A. Caponis. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Catawba Ward.
Surviving are a son, John Caponis of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Tina C. Puckett of Rock Hill; two brothers, M.T. (Mack) George of York and Claude Lynard George of Rock Hill; five sisters, Bertha Mae Harris, Leola Brown, both of York, Missouri Brindle of Rock Hill, Margaret Smith of Spartanburg and Etta Teaster of Pacolet; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two foster children whom she raised, June Travelson of California and Terry Lee Mayes of Jacksonville, Fla.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Greene Funeral Home Downtown Chapel, conducted by Bishop Peiter Reyner. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, S.C. 29730.
The family is at the residence.

Reo Brock
Retired from Reeves Brothers Manufacturing.
CHESNEE – Reo Brock, 77, of 119 N. Texas Ave., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in Spartanburg Regional Health Care System.
Mr. Brock was the husband of Burena Lamb Brock and son of the late Will and Lillie Brock. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Reeves Brothers Manufacturing.
Surviving are a daughter, Frieda Koon of Chesnee; two sons, Ronald Brock of Chesnee and Dorman Brock of Boiling Springs; five sisters, Mamie Spake, Lois Martin, Beulah Griffin, Zinnie “Tina” Lamb, all of Chesnee, and Sudie Price of Mayo; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Eggers Funeral Home, conducted by the Revs. Larry Fleming and Claude White. Burial was in Springhill Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home of her son, Ronald Brock, 241 Margate Circle, Chesnee.

Richard Smith
Retired Army veteran
Richard Smith, 84, of Roosevelt, N.Y., died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Hempstead (N.Y.) General Nursing Home.
Born in Gaffney, he was the widower of Lillie Mae Johnson Smith and son of the late Landrum Smith Sr. and the late Flossie Morgan Smith. He was a former member of Limestone Baptist Church and a retired Army veteran.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Littlejohn of Hempstead; a son, Furman Johnson of Charlotte; two brothers, Landrum Smith Jr. and Eugene Smith Sr., both of Gaffney; a sister, Dorothy Oglesby of Cowpens; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Burnett Funeral Home in Hempstead. Burial will be in the Veteran’s cemetery in Hempstead.

Rozelle H. Fortenberry
SHELBY – Rozelle Harmon Fortenberry of 1017 Harmon Dr., died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in Cleveland Pines Medical Center.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Webb Chapel, with burial in Frederick Memorial Gardens in Gaffney. Body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.

Minnie M. Service
Cleveland County native
Minnie I. Moss Service, 95, formerly of 520 E. Buford St., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Brookview HealthCare Center.
A native of Cleveland County, N.C., she was the widow of Sam Service and daughter of the late Sigmon Moss and the late Nannie Batchelor Moss. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Gaffney.
Arrangements are incomplete. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.
