Mother of Gaffney resident
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Rita Klassen Oncken, 83, of Hallmar Care Center, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, following a long illness.
Funeral Mass will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Steven Rosonke. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Mrs. Oncken is survived by a son, Ricky (Penney) Oncken of Missoula, Montana, and a daughter, Pennie (Walt) Griffin of Gaffney; seven grandchildren, Scott Oncken, Holly Oncken, Martha Underwood, Megan Griffin, Shawn Griffin, Becky Haley and Kathy Anzis; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Esther Mae Novotny, Patricia Hollman and Mary Jane Kenney; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Oncken was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Born June 2, 1919, in Fairfax, Iowa, to Otto and Margaret Murphy Klassen, she married Edward Charles Oncken on Dec. 25, 1942, in Cedar Rapids. Mr. Oncken died in 1995. Mrs. Oncken graduated from St. Patrick High School and attended Burroughs Business College in Chicago. She worked as an accountant for C.R. Block Company for 27 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church where she started the Altar and Rosary Society and was a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of Mercy Auxiliary and St. Anthony’s study group for 51 years.
Mrs. Oncken had a zest for life. She enjoyed the outdoors, Scrabble, traveling and visiting with friends and relatives. She was always smiling and carried a positive attitude. She will be missed by many at Hallmar, where she had resided the past 16 months.
