Mattie Edwards
Mattie Borders Edwards, 70, of 4 Bass Courts, Hunnington, Long Island, N.Y., widow of Harold Edwards, died Tuesday, Aug. 19 in the Hunnington Hospital.
Daughter of the late Judge Borders and the late Katie Moore Borders, she was a native of Cleveland Co., N.C. She was a former member of Mikes Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by three sons, Edward Norris of Mooresboro, N.C., Calvin Borders of Atlanta, Ga., and Brian Borders of Denmark; two daughters, Sondra Borders and Cynthia Borders of Hunnington, Long Island, N.Y; two brothers, Judge Borders Jr. and James Borders of Shelby, N.C.; four sisters, Mary Byers of Shelby, N.C., Lidia Gregory of Gaffney, Maggie Brooks of Denver, Colo., and Valeria Petty of Cliffside, N.C.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Mikes Creek Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. S.M. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Mikes Creek Adjorning Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of Hattie Norris at 2431 Camp Creek Church Road, Mooresboro, N.C.
Foster Funeral Home of Gaffney is in charge of arrangements.

Rachel B. Gause
CHESNEE – Rachel Burnett Gause, 80, of 175 Stone Ridge Dr., died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at White Oak Estates.
A native of Spartanburg, she was the widow of Robert F. Gause and daughter of the late John Curtis Burnett and Mamie Williams Burnett.
Mrs. Gause was a retired director of financial aid at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and American University in Washington, D.C. She was a princess in the Daughters of the Nile, Jamil Temple, Columbia; past member of the Business and Professional Women of Spartanburg; and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Terry Gause Walter of Annandale, Va.; two brothers, J. Manning Burnett of Chesnee and Wilbur S. Burnett of Inman; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Aug. 24, at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Hensley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 950 W. Farris Rd., Greenville, S.C. 29605; or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 555 John B. White Blvd., Spartanburg, S.C. 29306.

Jerry Hayes
Jerry Wayne Hayes, 42, of 105 Catherine St. in Gaffney, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, he was the son of Martha Sue Cash Hayes of the home.
He was a former employee of Hamrick Industries, was of the Baptist faith, and was a graduate of Limestone College.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Donna Mahaffee of Gaffney; a brother, Larry Gene Hayes of Taylors; and a niece, Shannon Mahaffee.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Oakland Cemetery, with Capt. Stan Colbert officiating.
Vistitation will follow.
The family is at the residence.

Thomas Dellinger
Thomas “Tom” F. Dellinger, 77, resident of 108 Stowe Acres, Kings Mtn., N.C., died Friday, Aug. 22 at White Oak Manor.
Born in Cherokee Co., he was the son of the late Buren Lee and the late Bessie Mode Dellinger.
He was a former owner-operator of J&K Machine shop in Kings Mtn. and a member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
He is survived by a wife, Katherine Morris Dellinger of Kings Mtn.; a son, Kenneth Wayne Dellinger of Kings Mtn.; a daughter, Juanita D. Cloninger of Kings Mtn; a sister, Grace Dellinger Morris of Kings Mtn.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Dellinger Hughes; three brothers, Horace Dellinger, Roy Dellinger and John Dellinger; and a sister, Ollie Dellinger Mace.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church, with the Revs. Mitchell Pruitt and Robert Hicklin officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mtn.

Raymond Mullinax
Raymond Mullinax, 81, resident of 706 Bridges Dr., Kings Mtn., died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003 at White Oak Manor in Kings Mtn.
Born in Cherokee Co., S.C., he was the son of the late Grady and Anzie Huey Mullinax. He was preceded in death by one brother and seven sisters. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater and on Christmas Island in WWII, and was retired from Combustion Engineering in Kings Mtn. He attended Oak View Baptist Church and was a member of the Otis D. Green American Legion Post 155.
He is survived by his sons, Bill Mullinax and wife Sandra of Kings Mtn., and Wayne Mullinax and wife Barbara of Gastonia; daughters, Carol Brazzell and husband Gilbert, and Sandy Stone and husband Bill, all of Kings Mtn.; sister, Nellie Kobilis of Md.; nine grandchildren, Daune Galbraith and husband Hubbard of Greensboro, Wayne Brazzell and wife Leslie of Polkville, N.C., Larry Stone and wife Beverly of Kings Mtn., Lyndi Hardy and husband Steve of Gastonia, N.C., Dustin Mullinax of Burbank, Calif., Jaime Smith and husband Michael of Kings Mtn., Gina Mullinax, Brian Mullinax and Josh Mullinax, all of Gastonia; six great-grandchildren, Hank Galbraith, Holt Galbraith, both of Greensboro, Kelton Stone, Skylar Smith, Ryne Smith, all of Kings Mtn., and Blake Hardy of Gastonia.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003 at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel, with the Revs. Robbie Moore and Wayne Brazzell officiating.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mtn., N.C., and at other times at the home of the daughter Sandy Stone, 133 Brook Road, Kings Mtn., N.C.
Interment will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mtn., N.C.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice; or to White Oak Manor “Activities Fund,” 716 Sipes St., Kings Mtn., N.C. 28086.

Evelyn Broom
Evelyn Rebecca Torson Broom, 82, of 920 E. Main St., Smyrna, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003 at her home.
Born in Palmer, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Henry Torson and the late Mammie Boch Torson; and the wife of Burton H. Broom of the home.
She was a retired beautician and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Dennis Broom of Shelby.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Gordon Mortuary.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. in Smyrna Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Charles Foster officiating.
Pallbearers are Joe Pennington, Lee Edward McDaniel, Jody Pennington, Joe Dean Moss and Lee Roy Bradley.

Tommie Anne Ruppe
Tommie Anne Whelchel Ruppe, 79, of 1209 W. Rutledge Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, she was the widow of R.F. “Pete” Ruppe and daughter of the late Homer Horace Whelchel and the late Mary Jane Camp Whelchel. She was a homemaker and a member of Midway Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda McCraw and Judy Dennis, both of Gaffney; two sons and a loving and devoted daughter-in-law, Tony Ruppe of Gaffney and Phillip and Kathy Ruppe of Gaffney; three sisters, Elizabeth Patterson, Janelle Robison, both of Gaffney, and Mary Phillips of Charlotte; four brothers, Horace Whelchel of Gaffney, Don Whelchel of Fort Mill, Bud Whelchel of Pendleton and George Whelchel of Liberty; six grandchildren, Lisa Portillo, Lori Largent, Stacey Ruppe, Deana Rollins, Tyler Ruppe and Hannah Beth Strong; and four great-grandchildren, Brad Ruppe, Jordan Portillo, Brandon Ruppe and Jonah Rollins.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Midway Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Danny Emory. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m.
Pallbearers will be Myron Patterson, Butch Whelchel, Rick Robison, Terry Whelchel, Joe Whelchel and Relson Ruppe.
The family is at the residence.

Charles Branch
Charles William Branch, 72, of Cardinal Care Assisted Living in Hendersonville, N.C., died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at his residence.
Born in Gaffney, he was the son of the late Amos Oren Branch and the late Velma Louise Kimbrell Branch.
Mr. Branch, a retired college president, was a 1949 graduate, former teacher and coach at Gaffney High School. He was co-captain of the state basketball championship team, president of the student body and was an Eagle Scout.
He once played semi-professional baseball with Saxon Mills in Spartanburg Co. He was a graduate of Wofford College, where he played and coached baseball. He later received a masters degree in education from USC and doctorate of education from the University of Alabama. Mr. Branch was a former president of Chattanooga State Communtiy College in Tennesee and Trident Technical College in Charleston; a former dean of students at Midlands Technical Collge in Columbia. Mr. and Mrs. Branch chartered Scots Kirk Reformed Presbyterian Church in Summerville and were members of Pinecrest Reformed Presbyterian Church in Flat Rock, N.C.
He is survived by a wife, Barbara Collins Branchs of Hendersonville; daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Jack Matthews of Charlotte, Vicki and Mike McGinnis of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Evelyn Branch Carver of Gaffney; grandchildren, Rett Matthews, J.P. Matthews, Ryne Stewart, Taylor Stewart, Pat McGinnis and Ryan McGinnis; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sandra and Jimmy Rouse of Mullins.
Cryptside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24 at Frederick Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Gaffney, with the Rev. Ronald Beard officiating.
Pallbearers were his grandsons.
The family is at 400 Balsam Road, Hendersonville, N.C.

Loren Roberts
Loren Ca’ Ira Gordon Roberts, infant daughter of Kayla Lynne Gordon and Terry Mark Roberts, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003.
