Mother of Gaffney resident
Darlis Kilby, 81, of Hendersonville, N.C., died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Pardee Memorial Hospital in Hendersonville following a lengthy illness.
A fourth generation native of Grass Valley, Calif., she was a daughter of the late George and Sadie Bennetts and had lived in Henderson County for the past 10 years. She attended business college for two years and worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 3-1/2 years during World War II. A member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, she sang in their choir, as she had done for most of her adult life.
Surviving are her loving husband of 58 years, Loyd Kilby; a daughter, Caren Lee Bell and her husband, Dr. Charles R. Bell, of Orlando, Fla.; a son, Alan C. Kilby of Gaffney; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several cousins and relatives in Grass Valley, Calif.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at First Baptist Church in Hendersonville, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth C. Skip Fendley and the Rev. Dr. Charles R. Bell.

ORANGEBURG Rozell Paula Phillips Rowland, 83, of 1065 Greenville St., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at her residence.
Mrs. Rowland was born Oct. 28, 1920, in Gaffney. She was the daughter of the late Riley Phillips and the late Martha Phillips. She was a member of the Salvation Army and was employed with the Salvation Army. She was the widow of Thad Rowland.
Surviving are two sons, Jimmie Rowland and Jerry Roland, both of Orangeburg; two daughters-in-law, Judy Rowland of Columbia and Cathy Roland of Orangeburg; five grandchildren, Tammy Roland, Jamie Roland, Lindsey Roland, all of Orangeburg, and Kim Roland and Michelle Roland, both of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Louise Phillips; and a number of half-sisters and half-brothers; and a number of nieces and nephews and great nieces and great-nephews.
Graveside services were held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Corinth Church Cemetery in Gaffney, conducted by Captain Jim McCurdy and Captain Herbert Frazier.

WELLFORD Shirley Jones Walker, 64, of 301 Green Oak Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital.
A native of Blacksburg, she was a daughter of the late Joe W. and Luna Marie Mode Jones. She was of the Baptist faith and a LPN.
Surviving are two sons, Ron Reynolds of Greer and Steve Reynolds of Blacksburg; a daughter, Lisa Reynolds of the home; five brothers, Clarence, Larry, Tommy, Wayne and Chuck Jones; a sister, Lib Andrews; and six grandchildren, Miranda, Elizabeth, Shannon, Jessica, Megan and Steven.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by a son, Joe Reynolds.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Wood Mortuary, conducted by the Revs. Keith Kelly and Jean Dockery. Burial will be in Wood Memorial Park.

BLACKSBURG Clara Elizabeth Stone Scoggins, 78, of 253 Mullinax Circle, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Greenback, Tenn., she was the wife of William Henry Scoggins and daughter of the late Charlie Stone and the late Carrie White Stone. She was a retired textile seamstress and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Stoney Scoggins of Blacksburg, Charles Stewart of Kings Mountain and Mark E. Stewart of Spartanburg; a daughter, Judy Stewart Bailey of Blacksburg; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Charlie Barnard and Dick Norris. Burial will be at 315 Mullinax Circle, Blacksburg.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Batcheler, Mark Stewart, Donald Creswell, William Scoggins and Ray Greenway.

HICKORY, N.C. Weldon Wayne Oram Sr., 81, of 910 29th Avenue Northwest, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory.
A native of Logansport, Ind., he was the widower of Nora Lee Hardin Oram and son of the late Pliny Earnest Oram and the late Flossie Edith Brown Oram. He was a self-employed painter and of the Methodist faith.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Oram.
Surviving are a son, Weldon Wayne Oran Jr. of Hickory; daughters, Charlotte Oram Sutton of Greensboro; Betty Oram Freeman of Fort Mill; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeanne Grandstaff of Logansport, Ind.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

BLACKSBURG L. Donald Moore, 58, of 545 Oak Grove Road, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Mr. Moore was the husband of Judy Mullinax Moore of the home and son of the late Perry Moore and Odell Mullinax Moore. He was a mechanic with Stouffer's and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two brothers, Theral Moore and Kenneth Moore, both of Gaffney.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Revs. Norman Philbeck and Joel Gardner.

A native of Pensacola, Fla., she was the wife of James R. McCarty of the home and daughter of Ebb and Kathleen Hardy Hyatt of Blacksburg. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church of Blacksburg.
Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are two daughters, Stephanie Harris Crawford and husband, James, of Blacksburg and Jennifer Harris Arms and husband, Mackie, of Gaffney; two brothers, E.B. "Buddy" Hyatt and wife, Glenda, of Harvey, La. and Edward "Eddie" Hyatt and wife, Susan, of Blacksburg; a sister, Eileen Hyatt Bloski of Blacksburg; and one grandchild, Devin Arms.

A native of Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Herbert Massebeau and the late Eva Murph Massebeau. She was a retired textile employee and member of Limestone Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are five nieces, Vicki Seigler Roark of Gaffney, Becky Massebeau Colvin of Chester, Genie Ward Nolan of Atlanta, Ga., Chinkie Woodward Oestenstad of Birmingham, Ala., and Ann Woodward McKee of Cashiers, N.C.; a nephew, Tom Ward of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Benjamin "B.J." Fowler Jr., 64, of Lot 39, Greenfield Road, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at his residence.
A native of Lockhart, he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Fowler Sr. and the late Evelyn Camp Fowler. He was retired from R&W Flooring Company and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Fowler most enjoyed truck driving and was formerly employed by Arthur White Trucking. He was loved by everyone.
Surviving are two daughters, Flora "Jean" Fowler of Spartanburg and Angela Fowler Durham of Gaffney; three sisters, Emma Lee Phillips, Flora Fowler Moore, both of Gaffney, and Lois Fowler Ray of Blacksburg; three grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Thomas Fowler, and a sister, Marguerite McKinney.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Cherokee Gospel Tabernacle, conducted by the Revs. Bruce Kanipe and Dennis Bradshaw. Burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery in Pacolet. Body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.

Hobart Wesley Duvall, 61, of 206 12th St., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at his residence.
A native of Tryon, N.C., he was the husband of Judy Spencer Duvall and son of the late Henry Duvall and the late Bonnie Gentry Duvall. He was retired from Green Thumb Landscaping and was a member of Silica Springs Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Ronald Evans and Mark Evans, both of Gaffney; three daughters, Anna Duvall of Denver, N.C., Kathy McPherson and Cindy Thomas, both of Gaffney; two sisters, Betty Millen of Gaffney and Hazel Patty of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, David and Stevie Duvall of Florida; 10 step-grandchildren, Katie, Macie and Hunter McPherson, Chad, Taylor, Sonya, Brook and Ronnie Evans, and Holly and Cody Thomas.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Duvall was preceded in death by two sons, Johnny Duvall and Stevie Duvall, and a grandson, Stevie Ballard.

COWPENS Corinne Blanton Moore, 83, widow of Winfred B. ("Went") Moore, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Health Care Center in Charleston.
Mrs. Moore was born on April 8, 1920, in Cherokee Falls, a daughter of Eva Henderson and James Blanton. She graduated from Blacksburg High School and attended business college for one year. She worked as an executive secretary at Spartan Mills in Spartanburg. She was a faithful member, and an assistant secretary, of the First Baptist Church of Cowpens.
Mrs. Moore was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She took joy in baking cakes and canning pickles for others. She was also an avid gardener, who for years grew yards full of beautiful flowers at her home in Cowpens.
Mrs. Moore is survived by a daughter, Myra DuBose Simmons of Tallahassee, Fla.; a son, Bo Moore of Mt. Pleasant; a grandson, David DuBose of Columbus, Ohio; a granddaughter, Diane Bardhi of Tallahassee, Fla.; three great-grandsons, Cole and Carsen DuBose and Durim Bardhi; and one great-granddaughter, Corinne DuBose.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Cowpens First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Gregory Dry, the Rev. Dr. M. B. Morrow and the Rev. Ronell Owensby. Entombment will be in Daniel Morgan Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends at the church Wednesday from 1-1:45 p.m.

Son of the late Rev. Orange Smith and the late Ethel Jeter Smith, he was a native of Union County, a member of Antioch Baptist Church and a retired farmer.
Surviving are two sisters, Clara R. Darby of the home and Asaree Smith of Jonesville; a niece, Judy Richardson, a nephew, Daniel Richardson, a great-niece, Lorie Richardson, and a great-nephew, Devine Richardson, all of whom were reared in the home as his children.

Virlee Dover, 78, of 770 St. Nicholas Ave., New York City, widow of John S. Dover, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, in St. Luke Hospital.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late George Wood and the late Eular Mae Jefferies. She moved from Gaffney to New York City in 1958 and was a retired dietary aide from the Joint Disease North General Hospital in New York. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Surviving are six children, Shirley Dover, Yvonne Dover, Yvette Dover, John Dover, Michael Dover and Jerry Dover, all of New York City; a brother, James "Pat" Goudelock of Gaffney; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
After Tuesday, the family will be at 108 Cat Creek Road off Union Highway.
