Marion J. Vassey
Retired from Milliken
INMAN – Marion Jolley Vassey, 76, formerly of 548 McGraw Road, Cowpens, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Inman Healthcare Center.
A native of Spartanburg, she was the widow of W.T. Jolley and Thurmond Vassey. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Clinton Vassey and Oneata Fagan Vassey. She was a retired employee of Milliken and Co., Cotton Blossom Division, and was a member of New Pleasant Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and former choir member.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Vassey was preceded in death by a son, Ronald F. Jolley, and a brother, Aldon Vassey.
Surviving are a daughter, Winona J. Rowe of Cowpens; two sisters, Windell Goodwin of Inman ad Ramona Bridges of Shelby; and three granddaughters.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at New Pleasant Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. George Holland and Marvin Greene. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to New Pleasant Baptist Church, Hand Bell Fund, 242 New Pleasant Road, Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
The family is at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Winona and Vernon Rowe, 544 McGraw Road, Cowpens.

Emogene F. Bridges
Retired from Gaffney Mfg.
Emogene Fowler Bridges, 76, of 1199 S. Green River Road, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, in Mary Black Memorial Hospital.
A native of Gaffney, she was the wife of Buford Bridges. She was first married to the late Jessie Willard Fowler. Retired from Gaffney Manufacturing Company, she delivered for Meals on Wheels for several years and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church and was a member of the Amazing Grace Singers.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Jimmy Fowler, Allen Fowler and Larry Fowler, all of Gaffney; seven grandchildren, Angela Martin, Page Gibson, Ward Fowler, John Fowler, Brandon Fowler, Julia Sokolow and Billy Fowler; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Gibson of California and David McBee of Florida; and two cousins, Joan and Ann Mosley.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by Dr. Clyde Thomas and Dr. Terry Duvall. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Billy Fowler, John Allen Fowler, Terry Mabry, Dewey Walls, Johnny Bridges, Ted Humphries, Eric Martin and Mark Martin.

The family is at the home of Allen Fowler, 183 White Oak Road, Gaffney.

Queen V. Miller
BLACKSBURG – Services for Queen Victoria Miller, 81, of 133 Old Yorkville Road, wife of the Rev. John Ca-lvin Miller Sr., will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hope-well Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Funderburk. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home in Gaffney.

Myrtle W. Patterson
Retired from Hudson Department Store in Shelby
SHELBY – Myrtle Whitesides Patterson, 86, of 1816 Sulphur Springs Church Road, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Celia Mauney Whitesides and widow of George B. Patterson to whom she was married for 46 years. She was valedictorian of her 1936 graduating class at Waco High School and retired from Hudson Department Store after working for 36 years as a salesperson. She was a loving mother and homemaker.
Surviving are a son, Joe Patterson of Shelby; daughters and spouses, Beth and Bernard Dalton of Gastonia, Mildred and Harold Pennington Sr. of Blacksburg, Celia Pribble and friend, Darryl Hopper, of Cherryville and Sadie and Steven Lowery of Grover; a sister, Frances Malone of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren, Brian and Shelia Dalton of Belmont, Susan and Mike Hall, Joey and Laura Patterson, Scott and Kim Patterson, John and Margaret Pribble, Jimmy Pribble, Lisa and Scott Alvino, all of Shelby, Harold and Laurinda Pennington Jr., Paula and William Cobb Jr., all of Blacksburg, Michele Lowery and friend, Joe Bundens, of Raleigh, Stephanie and Lenny Moore of Rock Hill and Jason and Hayley Lowery of Grover; 17 great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by brothers, Charlie, Willie, Walter, Joby, Clarence and Marvin Whitesides; and sister, Annie Carpenter and Lillie Owens.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Towery. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30-8 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.
The family is at the home of Celia Pribble, 335 Cross Creek Drive, Cherryville.

Bertha G. Hammett
Graveside services for Bertha Godfrey Hammett, 94, formerly of 852 Champion Ferry Road, will be held today at 11 a.m. at Cherokee Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Frazier.
The family is at the home of Mrs. Ronald G. Burns, 1057 Hwy. 11, Chesnee.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cherokee Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 502 Buck Shoals Road, Gaffney, S.C. 29341.

Junior W. Byers
Services for Junior Wright Byers, 61, of Ivy Grove Residential, widower of Sara Ruth Gregory Byers, will be held today at 4 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. J.W. Sanders Sr. and the Revs. Lawrence Davidson, Deborah Livsey and Wallace Gregory. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Robert Byers, Norman Dean Crosby, Sylvester Gregory, Everett Hopper, Bennie Littlejohn III, Terry Manning, Kenny Norris and Kelvin Tate.
Flower bearers will be Donna Crosby, Lula M. Fair, Anie Bell Hopper, Keisa Linder, Dorothy Manning, Diane Norris, Lamie Robinson, Rose Wilkins and Mary Whittenburg.

Gussie W. Bolton
Retired from Craftspun Yarn
KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. – Gussie Whitaker Bolton, 92, of 206 Fairdell St., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney.
Born in Rutherford County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Jonathan and Sarah Blanton Whitaker and widow of Martin “Pappy” Bolton to whom she was married for 72 years.
Mrs. Bolton was retired from Craftspun Yarn. She was a talented musician, played and taught the violin, and taught several young pastors to read. She organized and directed the Kings Mountain Swinging Mountaineers, a senior citizens band, and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Christian Freedom Baptist Church in Kings Mountain and a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby.
Surviving are three sons, Clayton Bolton, Robert “Pete” Bolton, both of Kings Mountain, and Jim Bolton of Chesnee; two daughters, Judy Lovelace of Kings Mountain and Gail Hampton of Blacksburg; a sister, Velma Hampton of Rutherfordton, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Christian Freedom Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Mike Chambers, Sam Snyder, Eric Sellers and James Ellis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be tonight from 6-8:30 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home, 108 S. Piedmont Ave., Kings Mountain.
