Brenda S. Ballenger
Former employee of Hamrick’s
Brenda Steadman Ballenger, 55, of 622 Edgewater Drive, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare.
A native of Gaffney, she was the wife of Mike Ballenger and daughter of Marjorie Robbs Steadman and the late Bill Steadman. She was a former employee of Hamrick’s and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a son, Michael Ballenger Jr. of Gaffney; a daughter, Crystal Ballenger of the home; and three sisters, Marjorie Ann Lambright, Lynn Hill and Gwen Sanders, all of Gaffney.
Graveside services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Scott Hammett.
Pallbearers were Casey Hammett, Phillip Ruppe, Harvey Davis, Ronnie Bryant, David Toney and Ronnie Smith.
The family will receive friends any time at the home of her mother, Marjorie Steadman, 406 Union St.

Sue McCraw
Retired from Fiber Industries
Anna Sue Elmore McCraw, 81, of 708 Union St., died Monday, June 14, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Health-care.
A native of Gaffney, she was the widow of Morgan McCraw Sr. and daughter of the late Albert D. Elmore and the late Annie Laurie Alexander Elmore. She was retired from Fiber Industries and was a member of Grassy Pond Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Laura Keller of Gaffney, Anna Lisa McCraw of Belmont, N.C., and Susan Ulmer of Columbia; a son, Morgan McCraw Jr. of Gaffney; a sister, Mary Smith of Lenoir, N.C.; and two grandsons.
Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Grassy Pond Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by Dr. Roger Aycock.
Pallbearers will be Taylor Kite, Bryan Kite, Chris Ulmer, Johnny Pettit, Craig Coyle, Howell Harris and Tommy Smith.
Memorials may be made to Grassy Pond Baptist Church Building Fund, 254 Grassy Pond Road, Gaffney, S.C. 29341.
The family is at the home.

Laura F. Breise
Former resident of Cherokee Falls
Laura Merle Floyd Breise, 80, of San Diego, Calif., died June 12, 2004.
Originally from Shelby, and then from Cherokee Falls, she moved to San Diego and served her country in the U.S. Navy. She retired from Civil Service in 1979.
Mrs. Breise was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and is survived by her sister, Alice Floyd Moss, of Spartanburg and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Mrs. Breise will be remembered as a kind and generous person.
Services will be held at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, Calif., at 10 a.m. on June 20.

Grover E. Pruitt Sr.
Retired manager of shipping department at Spartan Undies
Grover Evins Pruitt Sr., 81, of 2102 Union Hwy., died Monday, June 14, 2004, at his home.
A native of Cowpens, he was the husband of Maxis Jolly Pruitt and son of the late Crawford Evans Pruitt and the late Kate Fowler Pruitt. He was retired manager of the shipping department at Spartan Undies and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Jerry Pruitt of North Augusta, Michael Scott Pruitt and Ronald Vann Pruitt, both of Spartanburg; two daughters, Danielle Pruitt Hawkins and Dawn Pruitt Wright, both of Gaffney; a sister, Sara Pearce of Charleston; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held today at 4 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. James Blackwood. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Grover Pruitt Jr., Michael Scott Pruitt, Ronald Vann Pruitt, William Hawkins, Matthew Hawkins and Randy Hawkins.
The family is at the residence.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 310-B Bennett Center Dr., Greer, S.C. 29650.

Joe D. Smith
Former Gaffney resident
SHELBY – Joe Donald Smith, 67, formerly of Gaffney, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Smith was the son of the late Paul H. and Florence Denton Smith.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Smith of Gaffney; a son, James Allan Smith Sr. of Gaffney; a daughter, Donna Hill of Gaffney; three sisters, Amelia King of Kings Mountain, Nadine Martin of Little Rock, S.C., and Diane Edwins of Clinton, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are incomplete. Lutz-Austell Funeral Home is in charge.

Alonso Weaver
Cleveland County native
Alonso Lamar Weaver, 25, of 1506 Williamson Road, Kingstown, N.C., died Friday, June 11, 2004, at 5:45 p.m. in Columbia Care Center, Columbia.
Son of Bernard F. Weaver and Dianne Johnson Weaver, he was a native of Cleveland County, N.C., and 1998 graduate of Burns High School.
Also surviving are a son, Alonso Lamar Weaver Jr. of Shelby; four brothers, Jonathan T. Johnson of Kingstown, Rodney D. Johnson of Cherryville, Bernard A. Weaver of Shelby and Avis M. Weaver of Charlotte; grandparents, John Johnson of Shelby and Earlene Weaver of Kingstown; and great-grandmother, Mattie Elder of Kingstown.
Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Maple Spring Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert L. Dover. Burial will follow. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. and the family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 until the hour of the services.

Ray Junior Bagwell
Navy veteran of WWII
Ray Junior Bagwell, 79, of Icard, N.C., died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in Valdese General Hospital.
Mr. Bagwell was born on July 5, 1924, in Cleveland County to the late Joe S. Bagwell and Hester McCombs Bagwell. He was a retired carpenter and U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3447 in Gaffney.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hoyle Edward Bagwell; a sister, Hesterleen Bagwell; a half-brother, Joe T. Bagwell; nephews, Roger Joe Davis Sr. and Charles Richard Davis; and a great-nephew, Darian Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Ballew Bagwell of the home; a sister, Hazel B. Davis of Gaffney; a half-sister, Daisey Allen of Farmington, N.M.; and a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese, N.C. Officiating will be the Rev. Coley Bryant.
A graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Cliffside, N.C., with military rites by VFW Post 3447 of Gaffney.

Sadie Mae Hemphill
Worked in cafeteria at Limestone College
BLACKSBURG – Sadie Mae Hemphill, 41, of 109 Whisonant St., died Sun-day, June 13, 2004, in Spartanburg Regi-onal Medical Center.
Daughter of William Richard Hemphill of Gaffney and the late Alberta Covington Thompson, she was a native of Cherokee County and a member of Youngs Grove Baptist Church. She was a 1981 graduate of Blacksburg High School and was employed by Limestone College in the cafeteria department.
Surviving in addition to her father are two sons, Travis Markeith Hemphill of North Carolina Central University, Chapel Hill, N.C., and Charles Quinton Hemphill of Gaffney; two sisters, Cerecia Hemphill and Sylvia Camp of Gaffney; a brother, Richard William Hemphill of Gaffney; a step-sister, Sheena Renee Beal of Blacksburg; and a step-brother, Lyman Thompson Jr. of Greenwood.
Services will be held Sunday afternoon at Youngs Grove Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Larry J. Brooks. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church an hour before the services.
The family is at the home of her brother, Richard William Hemphill, 197 Bunche St., Gaffney.
