Local businessmen purchase tax lien on boulevard strip mall
$133,000 in back taxes owed on the property
      Imagine owning a strip mall and fastfood restaurant for the average cost of a new home here. It could happen. P&R Investments, a firm owned by two local businessmen, purchased the county’s tax lien on a financially-troubled strip mall on Floyd Baker Boulevard. Its tenants include Citi Trends, Aaron’s, Hibbett Sports and Pizza Hut.

Tech students sponsor career fair
      Joanna Ramirez stuck her fingers inside a mannequin head and wiggled around the mouth with dental tools. While she wasn’t working on real teeth, Ramirez was getting her first exposure to a future career as a dental hygienist. She was among dozens of Luther Vaughan Elementary students who paraded Jan. 28 into the gym at 30-minute intervals to learn about different jobs.

Scores on state’s new standardized tests show ‘room for improvement’
      While the name has changed, Cherokee County schools are still seeing a similar pattern emerge on the standardized state test for elementary and middle schools. County students posted their highest scores in English and Math on the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS). Their lowest performance occurred on the social studies and science tests.

Timken’s losses are decreasing
      Canton, Ohio-based The Timken Company, parent of the Gaffney Roller Bearing Plant, continued to lose money in the fourth quarter of 2009 and reported a fullyear loss of $134 million. Yet quarterly losses narrowed from a year ago and the company, which is one of Cherokee County’s largest employers, is forecasting a brighter outlook for 2010.
