Local resident Jay Byars hasn’t gotten much sleep the past few weeks.

Typically comfortable in front of flash bulbs as a model, a nervous energy has taken over lately as he anxiously waits to see if his dashing looks transfer from pictures in a national publication to the television sets of millions worldwide.

I have read reports of cave drawings in France that portray our ancient ancestors enjoying a steaming hot bowl of winter squash soup.

I don’t know if this story is true, but it is an undisputed fact that winter squash soup recipes have been around for a long time. So long, in fact, that I felt this old standby was in desperate need of a makeover.

CLINTON – Ralph N. “Buzz” Tedards, 84, of 902 Calvert Ave., died Monday, Feb. 13, 2010.

He was born in Pickens on Feb. 4, 1928, and was the son of the late J. H. Tedards. Mr. Tedards was also predeceased by brothers Jack, Billy, Roy, Frank and Connor Tedards.

Born in Gaffney, she was the wife of Johnny Franklin Elliott of the home and daughter of the late Mary Yvonne Bible Childers.

Mrs. Elliott was a graduate of Gaffney High School, a homemaker and member of Calvary Baptist Church in Cowpens.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) education recognition certificate for a quality diabetes selfmanagement education program was recently awarded to Upstate Carolina Medical Center’s program on Jan. 24. The diabetes education program at the hospital has been recognized by the ADA since 2005.

The star sophomore joins past Gaffney greats Sidney Rice, A.Z. Reid, Donald Sims, Josh Corry and Dershawn Dawkins as members of the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State team.

The versatile wing player averages 17.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and a block per game.

The Indians (18-5) were winners of 12 games in a row and playing their best basketball of the season before a regularseason ending loss Friday at Spartanburg.

The Blacksburg Lady Wildcats needed just about every second on the clock to reign supreme over Ware Shoals in their first round Class A playoff matchup on Monday.

After Ware Shoals missed a free throw, Blacksburg’s Malory Sanders grabbed the rebound and dribbled the ball downcourt.

The start of the regular season is still three weeks away, but the Gaffney High pitchers already look in midseason form.

The Indian hurlers combined for a shutout in last week’s scrimmage against Laurens and gave up just one run in a win over Broome in a scrimmage Monday.

Joey Copeland, in particular, had a solid outing against the Centurions.

Muffin miscue causes Alma students to evacuate

A burned breakfast biscuit in a microwave and a discharged fire extinguisher led to the brief evacuation of a local elementary school Tuesday.

Gaffney firefighters were dispatched to Alma Elementary School at 8:05 a.m. shortly after the microwave mishap.

“Somebody put a muffin in there and put it in there for entirely too long,” said Fire Capt. Wayne Brown.

Caggiano city’s new fire chief

Twenty years of climbing the fire ladder, rather than the corporate ladder, has led Jamie Caggiano to be the City of Gaffney’s next fire chief.

A firefighter for 20 years, Caggiano — the grandson of Sunny Slope founder Louis Caggiano — was named to the position Tuesday. He replaces Nathan Ellis, who resigned late last year.
