Gaffney’s L.J. Peak is in select company.

The star sophomore joins past Gaffney greats Sidney Rice, A.Z. Reid, Donald Sims, Josh Corry and Dershawn Dawkins as members of the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State team.

The versatile wing player averages 17.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and a block per game.

Gaffney coach Mark Huff is curious. Just how good are the Gaffney Indians? And how far can they go in the state playoffs?

The Indians (18-5) were winners of 12 games in a row and playing their best basketball of the season before a regularseason ending loss Friday at Spartanburg.

They open the playoffs today at home against Mauldin.

The Blacksburg Lady Wildcats needed just about every second on the clock to reign supreme over Ware Shoals in their first round Class A playoff matchup on Monday.

After Ware Shoals missed a free throw, Blacksburg’s Malory Sanders grabbed the rebound and dribbled the ball downcourt.

The start of the regular season is still three weeks away, but the Gaffney High pitchers already look in midseason form.

The Indian hurlers combined for a shutout in last week’s scrimmage against Laurens and gave up just one run in a win over Broome in a scrimmage Monday.

Joey Copeland, in particular, had a solid outing against the Centurions.
