5 Keys to Victory
1. MAKE THE JACKETS ONE DIMENSIONAL
The Gaffney Indians’ defense is allowing just 15 points a game and limited last week’s opponent, Lancaster, to less than 100 total yards. This week, the defense must stop the Jackets’ running game and force quarterbacks Jordan Griffin and David Martin into third and long passing situations.
2. block jackets’ defensive end Vance Walker.
The Jackets’ talented defensive end has a team-leading 63 tackles, 26 tackles for losses and 10.5 quarterback sacks. Fort Mill coach Greg Taylor calls Walker the best player he’s ever coached. The Indians’ offensive tackles must slow him down so he doesn’t dominate the line of scrimmage.
3. Avoid mistakes and turning the ball over
It’s the same story for the Indians - too many mistakes and costly turnovers. A week ago, quarterback Malcolm Long fumbled twice. The Indians also hurt themselves by commiting drive-stopping penalties. Without explosive playmakers, it’s made it harder for the Indians to overcome the penalties.
4. BLANKET THE SMURFS
The Yellow Jackets’ wide receivers have been dubbed the Smurfs because of their diminutive size. The Indians’ defensive backs must keep an eye on the wideouts, especially Jimmy Hiller, the most dangerous of the Jackets’ receiving corps.
5. STAY FOCUSED.
There have been plenty of distractions this week because of Homecoming activities. The Indians must stay focused on the task at hand - beating the Yellow Jackets - rather than the buzz surrounding the school’s extra-curricular activities.
