  • The Gaffney Planning & Zoning Commission on Tuesday approved a subdivision request, essentially clearing the way for a national auto parts retailer to build a store here.

O’Reilly Auto Parts plans to construct a 6,800 square-foot store on the Old West End School property along Floyd Baker Boulevard, a representative from the Springfield, Missouri, company told the commission.

The representative said the company has yet to submit site plans for the project.

O’Reilly opened its 1,000th store last year. Today, the company has 1,183 stores in 18 states, making it one of the top five auto parts chains in the country.

The commission unanimously approved the request to subdivide the 3.6-acre site into 1.5- and 2.13-acre parcels. The store will be located on the 1.5-acre parcel.

The subdivision request must still be approved by Gaffney City Council. That’s expected to happen at council’s meeting in December.

Stellar, Inc., owns the 3.6-acre parcel along Floyd Baker Boulevard.

    Zaxby’s will build

Another fast-food restaurant seems poised to build along Floyd Baker Boulevard.

Zaxby’s, which features a menu of chicken and side dishes, will be constructed on an outparcel at the old Gaffney Mall site, sources close to the deal said.

The restaurant will be built on an outparcel adjacent to the Waffle House and Blockbuster Video. The outparcel is currently owned by BB&T, which purchased the parcel from Kahn Development of Columbia.

In addition to chicken sandwiches, Zaxby’s also offers chicken wings, chicken fingers and chicken nuggets.

Zaxby’s is the latest restaurant to locate along the heavily traveled boulevard. A new Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant is expected to open soon at its new location at Cherokee Plaza.

There are about 200 Zaxby’s restaurants in the Southeast, including locations in Spartanburg and Boiling Springs. Plans call for that number to rise to 1,000 by 2006.
