Ledger Sports Editor
The Converse All-Stars played like all-stars Monday.
Lauren Mueller had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Melissa Ballard added 17 points to lead Converse to an 88-72 victory over the shorthanded Limestone Lady Saints, who played without Shell Lowrance and LaDovia Dukes.
The All Stars led by two in the early going before going up 19-8 after a 9-0 run.
Tiffany Jones capped a Limestone rally with a hoop to give her team a 25-23 lead. But the All Stars sank four 3-pointers in the final minutes as the team’s ended the first half tied at 36.
It was all Converse in the second half as the All-Stars outscored the Lady Saints 52-36 after intermission.
The free throw line was the difference in the game. The All-Stars hit 27-of-45 free throw attempts while Limestone converted just 9-of-16.
“We’ve got to find a way to win. We can’t shoot 33 percent and expect to win many,” Limestone coach Corey Fox said.
Jones had another outstanding game for the Lady Saints, with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Molly Williams added 9 points and 12 boards while Melissa DeVore contributed 11 points and 6 rebounds.
The loss drops Limestone to 0-3 while Converse improved to 1-4.
The Lady Saints will host USC-Aiken today in their final non-conference game before they open CVAC play against St. Andrews Presbyterian College on December 4.
