Newberry College beat Limestone College 22-15 on Tuesday in a battle of two rookie wrestling programs.
Limestone entered the contest seeking its first win in dual meet competition against Newberry. The Indians are currently ranked third in the nation among club teams by the National Club Wrestling Association.
Newberry took an early 10-0 lead on wins by Andrew Young, Rally Hyrne and Tony Washington.
Limestone scored its first points when Zach Gibson won a 7-0 decision over Danny Cotton in the 149 lb. weight class.
Gibson won the first match of his college career before a large crowd in the Timken gym. Fan support has been strong for both of Limestone’s home matches.
Limestone wrestling coach Ben Stehura thanked the fans for their support of the wrestling team.
“Newberry is a good team. We are young and still working some of the kinks out,” Stehura said. “We had a few good matches. We will progress and work towards getting better by the end of the year.”
Limestone wrestlers held their ground against Newberry, making the Indians earn most of their wins on 3-point decisions.
No Limestone wrestler was pinned during the meet. Tony Washington was the only Newberry wrestler to win a major decision over a Saint wrestler.
Limestone closed to within seven points when Rob Sater and John Richard won on forfeits in the 197 lb. and 285 lb. weight classes. Each forfeit was worth six points.
Richard remained perfect on the season at 6-0. Sater improved his record to 5-3.
Limestone will wrestle on the road for the next two months. The Saints’ next matches are a dual meet on Dec. 2 against Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa., and the Simpson tournament on Dec. 4 in Ashland, Ohio.
