Cocaine found in newborn
Child taken into protective custody
Ledger Staff Writer
A day-old child was taken into emergency protective custody after cocaine was found in the baby’s system. The young girl was born Saturday at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Officials from the Cherokee County Department of Social Services contacted the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office after discovering that the newborn female and her 22-year-old mother of Gaffney both tested positive for cocaine, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office states. That indicated that the mother had used the drug while she was pregnant, police said. Sheriff’s deputies turned the child over to the protective custody of DSS, the report states. Police and DSS are continuing to investigate.
