School board chairman names committee members

School board committees have been reorganized by board chairman Sandra Greene following the November elections.

Greene will chair the personnel committee, which traditionally consists of the board’s officers. Other committee members are vice chairman Lindley Auton, secretary Barry Bailey and parliamentarian Ola Copeland.

Greene will be an ex-officio member of all committees. She will serve as the school board legislative contact.

After being elected to a third term in November, Willie Crosby will chair the curriculum committee. He will be joined by Billy Blackwell, Pat Wells and Copeland.

The committee will deal with issues like an upcoming report from coaches on revising the district’s “C” average policy. School trustees agreed in late September to give coaches a larger role in shaping the district’s 3-year-old policy requiring all students to maintain an overall “C” average to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports.

Copeland will chair the school board’s budget committee. Serving with her will be Auton, Bailey and Crosby.

After meeting sparingly over the past two years, Greene said she plans for the school board committees to have an increased role in decision-making.

“These will be working committees. Virtually every decision will go through a committee that will send a recommendation to the school board,” Greene said. “I think this will increase the school board’s effectiveness and allow board members to know what is going on. Hopefully, this will eliminate the need to add items to the agenda at Tuesday meetings.”

The maintenance, property and grounds committee will be chaired by Donnie Lee Smith. He will be joined by Auton, Bailey and Blackwell.

Bailey will chair the special needs committee. The remaining committee members are Mike Ellis, Smith and Wells.

The school board will hold its last meeting of this year on Dec. 14. The board will resume holding two meetings per month in January.
