N.Y. woman trapped in beach sinkhole
MYRTLE BEACH — A 65-year-old New York woman who was walking along the beach stepped into a sinkhole and had to be rescued, authorities said. Betty Vincent was walking on the beach about 8:30 a.m. Sunday when she stepped on sand that covered a drainpipe leading to the ocean, Myrtle Beach Police Sgt. Harry Rogers said. She fell into a hole that was about 5 feet to 6 feet deep. Vincent tried to wiggle out for about 30 minutes but was rescued when firefighters and officers dug around her. Vincent was not in danger of drowning because it was low tide, Myrtle Beach Police Sgt. Phillip Cain said. Myrtle Beach public works employees filled in the sinkhole and roped off the area around it, Cain said. They will dig up the drainpipe and fill in the sinkhole this week.
