COLUMBIA — Broome blew a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter and then scored two touchdowns in the space of 18 seconds to defeat Cheraw 42-34 and win the Class 2A state championship Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The Centurions (11-4) led 28-7 going into what proved to be a wild-and-woolly fourth quarter but saw that lead evaporate under a series of fumbles and a furious Cheraw comeback.

The Braves scored 27 points, ran 21 plays for 106 yards in just under eight minutes and took a 34-28 lead with 7:24 left in the game.

Broome bounced right back and drove 72 yards in seven plays, climaxed by a 34-yard touchdown pass from Thomas Turner to D.J. Moore. Heath Hembree’s extra point put the Centurions back on top 35-34 with 4:33 to play.

Cheraw immediately turned the ball back to the Centurions, and Moore returned the interception 38 yards to the Braves’ 2. Jerriall Brannon ran in the touchdown and Embree’s kick made it 42-34.

Broome’s comeback thwarted a strong performance by the Braves’ Chris Massey who rushed for four touchdowns, including three in the midst of the Cheraw rally. Massey finished with 134 yards on 24 carries.

Jerriall Brannon had 28 carries for 159 yards for the Centurions.
