Retired owner of
Pettit Electric Service
Thomas Anthony Pettit, 82, of 1112 Floyd Baker Blvd., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at his residence.
A native of Gaffney, he was the son of the late Edmund Pettit and the late Annie Anthony Pettit. He was retired owner and operator of Pettit Electric Service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Pettit was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a life deacon. He was a longtime supporter of the Limestone College Saints' sports programs and was inducted into the Limestone College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at the residence.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Hopper Sunday School Class and deacons of First Baptist Church and the coaches and staff of Limestone College.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Jack D. Fowler
Served in Pacific Theatre
during World War II
CHESNEE - Jack Dempsey Fowler, 72, of 335 New Pleasant Road, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at his home.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Imogene Lamb Fowler and son of the late James Elford and Janie Mathis Fowler. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a retired employee of Duke Power, a member of VFW Post 3447 in Gaffney, Chesnee Masonic Lodge Post 294 and New Pleasant Baptist Church.
Also surviving are a brother, Victor Eugene Fowler of Gaffney; a half-sister, Frances Feroline Oliver of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at New Pleasant Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. George Holland and Joey Turner. Burial was in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Pleasant Baptist Church, Bell Tower Fund, 242 New Pleasant Road, Gaffney, S.C. 29341.

George C. Barben
Ordained minister, educator
George Charles Barben, 54, of 251 Lake Tree Road, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Staten Island, N.Y., he was the husband of Brenda "Nickie" Moore Barben and son of George Joseph Barben and Dorothy Barben of Broadalbin, N.Y. He was a salesman and member of Pacolet Road Baptist Church. He was an ordained minister, an educator, and enjoyed playing golf.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a son, Brian Parker of Gaffney; three daughters, April Parker Moss of Cowpens, Holly Barben and April Barben, both of Florida; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Loretta Hoyt of Broadalbin, N.Y.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Pacolet Road Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Jimmy Powell and Benny Davis. Entombment will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Vince Moore, Jeremy Martin, Robbie Clary, Johnny Mac Brown Sr., Terry Martin and Robert Harris.
The family is at the residence.

John H. Shelton
Carpenter
John Henry Shelton, 63, of 294 Pondfield Road, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care.
A native of Chester, he was the husband of Vickie Hughey Shelton and son of the late Henry Brown Shelton and the late Ada Putnam Shelton. He attended Kirby Memorial Baptist Church and was a carpenter and a veteran.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Johnny Shelton, Kenneth Shelton, Mark Shelton and Scott Shelton, all of Gaffney; two daughters, Darla Ann Taylor of Gaffney and Jesika Shelton Caggiano of the home; four brothers, George Shelton, Jack Shelton, Bob Shelton, all of Gaffney, and Buddy Shelton of Goose Creek; and five grandchildren, Thomas D. Taylor Jr., Krystal Shelton, Victoria Shelton, Nikol Taylor and Haven Shelton.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Shelton, and four sisters, Margie Lucas, Betty Byrd, Velma Ramsey and Maphry Weaver.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel, conducted by the Revs. David Scruggs and Gregg Martin. Burial will be in Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery. Body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Gordon Mortuary and at other times they will be at 2473 Wilkinsville Hwy., Gaffney.

James Robert Turner, 71, formerly of 305 Kentwood Road, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in Brookview HealthCare.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the widower of Barbara Teague Turner and son of the late Lawrence Edward Turner and the late Elizabeth Spencer Turner. He was a retired department manager with Limestone (Lowenstein) Mill and was of the Baptist faith. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Surviving are two sons, Richard D. Turner and Robert L. Turner, both of Gaffney; a daughter, Teresa T. Sanders of Gaffney; three sisters, Christine Robertson, Catherine Hill and Eva "Bunt" Wallace, all of Gaffney; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery.

MOORESBORO - Peggy Joann Scoggins Callahan, 57, of 3825 Dedmond Road, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at her residence.
A native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of Fred Scoggins of Dallas, Texas, and the late Jessie Butler Scoggins. She was a homemaker and member of Cliffside Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Dusty Callahan of the home; two sons, Shannon Arrowood of Forest City and Kelly Arrowood of Blacksburg; a brother, Brent Scoggins of Pawhuska, Okla.; two sisters, Phyllis Barnett of Dallas, Texas, and Sharon Johnson of Rutherfordton; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Cliffside Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Larry Fleming and Terry White. Burial will be in Cliffside Cemetery.

Nancy W. Duckett

UNION - Nancy Wylie Duckett, 59, wife of Halon McArthur Duckett of 2028 Jonesville Hwy., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Duckett was born in Gaffney on May 14, 1945, a daughter of Gene and Gladys Searcy Wiley of Union. She was a graduate of Union High School and member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband and parents are two daughters, June Carol Davis and Julie Duckett Horne, both of Union; two sons, Danny Halon Duckett of the home and Richard Keith Duckett of Gaffney; a sister, Linda Blanton of Gaffney; a brother, Tom Boyle of Union; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Warren Jones and Clarence Crocker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Lillie R. Jefferies
Retired from Sunset Diner
Lillie Ruth Jefferies, 84, of 112 Granite Drive, widow of Fleetwood Jefferies Sr., died Fri-day morning, Dec. 3, 2004, at her residence.
Daughter of the late Clinton Rice and the late Lina Rice Rice, she was born on Oct. 9, 1920, in Union County. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1990. She was also preceded in death by two children, Mary Francis Lumpkin and Jesse Browning Jr.; two brothers; and seven sisters.
Mrs. Jefferies was a member of the Church of Christ on Marion Avenue and was a retired cook from the Sunset Diner.
Surviving are four sons, Fleetwood Jefferies Jr. of Gaffney, Matthew Jefferies Sr., John D. Jefferies, both of Spartanburg, and Terry L. Jefferies of the home; a daughter, Teressa McDowell of the home; 26 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ, 616 Marion Ave., conducted by the pastor, Brother Edward Hughes, and Brother Ivory Hunter, Brother Grady Mickles, Brother King Littlejohn, Brother Samuel Means and the Rev. L.D. Dawkins. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral.
Pallbearers will be the brothers of the church and flower bearers will be her granddaughters and church members.

Hampton J. Corry
Cross-country truck driver
Hampton Jones Corry, 79, of 401 Warburton Ave., Apt. 1C, Yonkers, N.Y., died at Allen Pavi-lion Hospital in Bronx, N.Y.
He was the son of the late Mamie Jones Corry and James Arthur Corry and was a cross-country tractor trailer driver for over 40 years. He was born on June 17, 1925, in Gaffney and was educated in the Cherokee County public schools.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Corry was preceded in death by a son, Hampton Alonzo Corry.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie G. Corry of Gaffney; two daughters, Dr. Beverly Corry of Gaffney and Detta Jefferies of Suitland, Md.; three sons, Hampton Sakyle Corry, Tyvian Reese Corry and Sheldon Lamont Corry of Yonkers; a stepson, Roger Sherman Gaston of Waterbury, Conn.; a sister, Janelle Coleman of Gaffney; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Limestone Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Golden. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Carlisle (Junior) Cook
Korean War veteran
Carlisle (Junior) Cook, 72, of 2815 Old Georgia Hwy., died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, he was the widower of Vera Jean Davis Cook and son of the late H. Cook Sr. and the late Ida Bell Scruggs Cook. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are two sons, Bobby Dean Cook of Gaffney and Clarence J. Cook of Jonesville; a daughter, Martha Jean Cook of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a brother, Smith Cook of Gaffney; two half-brothers, Robert (Bobby) Holsclaw of Gaffney and H. Cook Jr. of Shelby; a half-sister, Etta Jane Evans of Gaffney; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Cook was preceded in death by a son, John Edward Cook, and a brother, Leonard Cook.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Harold Dean Painter, Forest Teague and Altie Teague. Burial will be in Cowpens Cemetery. Body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Gregg White, Bruce Cook, Chris Cook, Matt Cook, David Henderson and Dewayne Nemeth.

Shirley Wylie Blackwell, 64, of 409 Hardin Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Blacksburg, she was the wife of A.G. Blackwell and daughter of the late John Wylie and the late Lummie Childers Wylie. She was a retired textile employee and of the Baptist faith.
Also surviving are a daughter, Cathy Butler of Gaffney; one grandchild; a brother, Olin Wylie of Spartanburg; and two sisters, Eliza Driskill and Louise Patterson, both of Blacksburg.
The family is at the residence where they will receive friends any time.
