City Hall brick will be red
By a razor-thin margin Monday, Gaffney City Council settled on the color of the brick facing and the interior design of the its new city hall complex. Long-time opponents of the project, councilmen Wayne Ramsey and Billy Love along with newcomer Dennis Ramsey, opposed the city’s Building and Grounds Committee recommendations. When asked why he voted no, Wayne Ramsey said he’s “against the whole project.” During the discussion prior to the vote, Wayne Ramsey also said he opposed at this time dyeing the light-colored brick on the adjacent fire station to match the red-colored brick selected for the proposed city hall. City Councilman Johnny Little has expressed his desire to dye the fire station brick. The committee recommended a beige and gold scheme for the interior of the building. The walls will be beige while the doors and trim will be cherry colored. Purple, gold and black highlight the multi-color, wear-resistant carpet chosen by the committee. Councilman Bernard Smith, who chairs the committee, read the list of other finishing options, including a darker shade of brick for the accents near the windows and asphalt shingles. He said the roof on the clock tower will be metal. The city is expected to advertise for bids for the proposed $4.4 million project on Friday, according to city administrator James Taylor. Companies have until Jan. 11 to bid on the project. Construction of the new city hall project is expected to be in the final stages by October of 2005.
