Teresa Wood

  • CAYCE – Graveside services for Teresa Kay Wood, 52, of Cayce, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, Blacksburg, conducted by Mr. Nelson Broome and Rev. J.O. Reed.

    Ms. Wood died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2004. Born in Gaffney, she was the daughter of Joann Broome McDaniel of Cayce and the late Marvin McDaniel. A lifelong area resident, she was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

    Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter, Beth Wood of Gaston; a son, Robby Wilson of Gaston; maternal grandparents, Nelson and Lois Broome; grandchildren, Ashley Fleeman and Harley Williamson; a niece, Christian Kreider; and great-niece, Caroline Kreider.

    In addition to her father, Ms. Wood was preceded in death by her sister, Beth Lybrand.

    Wilma B. Hartsoe

    Retired from Springs Ind.

    Wilma Blakenship Hartsoe, 77, of 359 Bridges Farm Road, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

    Born Jan. 4, 1927, in Fort Mill, Mrs. Hartsoe was the widow of Aaron W. Hartsoe Sr. and daughter of the late John Otis Blankenship and Mildred Bennett Blankenship. She was retired from Springs Industries after 33 years of service and was a member of the 25-Year Club. Mrs. Hartsoe was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church and was a member of the 50+ Sunday School Class at Fairview Baptist Church in Gaffney. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

    Surviving are two sons, John A. Hartsoe of Chesnee and Aaron Hartsoe Jr. of York; a daughter, Linda Honeycutt of Fort Mill; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    A memorial service was held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Fairview Baptist church, 505 Fairview Road, Gaffney, conducted by the Rev. Stuart Kersey. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, 1691 W. Hwy. 160, Fort Mill, conducted by the Revs. Randy Smith and Stuart Kersey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

    The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 p.m. at Philadelphia United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall and at other times they will be at the home of Linda and Ronald Honeycutt, 1948 Gold Hill Road, Fort Mill.

    Memorials may be made to Philadelphia United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1691 W. Hwy. 160, Fort Mill, S.C. 29708; or to the Fairview Baptist Church Building Fund, 505 Fairview Road, Gaffney, S.C. 29340.

    Shirley W. Blackwell

    Retired textile employee

    Shirley Wylie Blackwell, 64, of 409 Hardin Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

    A native of Blacksburg, she was the wife of A.G. Blackwell and daughter of the late John Wylie and the late Lummie Childers Wylie. She was a retired textile employee and of the Baptist faith.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Earleen Garner.

    Surviving in addition to her husband, A.G. Blackwell, of the home are a daughter, Cathy Butler, and husband, Jeff, of Gaffney; a granddaughter, Kayleigh Butler; a brother, Olin Wylie of Spartanburg; and two sisters, Eliza Driskill and Louise Patterson, both of Blacksburg.

    The family is at the residence, 409 Hardin Drive, where they will receive friends any time.

    Services will be private.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.C., 1612 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29341; or to Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 500 E. Montgomery St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.

    Services for Lillie Ruth Jefferies, 84, of 112 Granite Drive, widow of Fleetwood Jefferies Sr., will be held today at 2 p.m. at Marion Avenue Church of Christ, 616 Marion Ave., conducted by the pastor, Brother Edward Hughes, and Brother Ivory Hunter, Brother Grady Mickle , Brother King Littlejohn, Brother Samuel Means and the Rev. L.D. Dawkins. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church for 30 minutes prior to the funeral.

    Pallbearers will be the Brothers of the church and flower bearers will be her granddaughters and church members.

    BLACKSBURG – Donald Richard Strawn Sr., 69, of 128 Bear Den Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

    Carol Ann Bennett Baggott, 49, of 100 Brookwood Lane, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at her residence.

    Born in Harpersville, Ala., she was the wife of Charles Baggott of the home and daughter of Betty Jean Goodwin Bennett of Warrenville, S.C., and the late Bernard Caldwell Bennett. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

    Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two sons, Donald Baggott and Ronald Baggott, both of Grover, N.C.; two daughters, Roudy Rayfield and Angela Baggott, both of Gaffney; a step-daughter, Linda Whitman of Orangeburg; three brothers, Oliver Earl Bennett, Teryr Ray Bennett, both of Warrenville, and Bobby Lee Goodwin of Birmingham, Ala.; two sisters, Dorothy McBrayer of Warrenville and Emogene Hollar of Bath, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

    In addition to her father, Mrs. Baggott was preceded in death by two sisters, Brenda Joyce Walker and Debroah Gail Arthurs.

    Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tim Osment. The family will receive friends Thursday at the mortuary from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.

    The family is at 829 Lavender Road, Grover, N.C.

    Hampton J. Corry

    Services for Hampton Jones Corry, 79, of 401 Warburton Ave., Apt. 1C, Yonkers, N.Y., will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Limestone Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Golden. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

    Dr. William J. Martin III

    GLENNVILLE, Ga. – Dr. William J. Martin III, 61, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in Fort Stewart Ga.,

    A native of South Carolina, he was the husband of Nancy Clinton Martin and son of William J. Martin Jr. of Blacksburg and the late Marjorie Bridges Martin.

    Dr. Martin lived in Vidalia, Ga., for over 20 years and in Glennville for the past three years. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in veterinary medicine and was employed by the USDA for 23 years. At the time of his death, he was employed by the Georgia Poultry Laboratory.

    Dr. Martin was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army and was a former deacon at First Baptist Church of Vidalia. A member of Glennville First Baptist Church, eh was active in the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

    Also survivivng are three sons, Patrick Martin of Macon, Ga., John Martin of Glennville and William (Jeff) Martin, who is serving on the USS Cowpens in Yokosuko, Japan; a daughter, Laura Eileen McMillan of Alconberry, England; two brothers, Glenn F. Martin and Everett W. Martin, both of Blacksburg; and three grandchildren.

    Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Blacksburg, conducted by Rick Douglas.

    Pallbearers will be Bobby Martin, David Martin, Campbell Martin, Beaman Washburn, David Hogue and George Martin.

    The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary in Blacksburg and at other times they will be at 854 Hopewell Road, Blacksburg.

    Minnie A. Smith

    Cherokee County native

    GREENVILLE – Minnie Alice Smith, 78, of 1 Warren Court, widow of Hilton Smith, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at 7:15 a.m. at Saint Francis Hospital.

    Born and raised in Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late Buddy and Tinnie Harris. She joined Mt. Tabor Baptist Church at an early age and later joined Tabernacle Baptist Church in Greenville.

    Surviving are a son, Reggie Smith of Simpsonville; three daughters, Elaine Butler, Jacqueline Campell of Greenville and Deborah Ree Smith of Spartanburg; two brothers, Floyd Harris of Baltimore, Md., and Kenneth B. Harris of Gaffney; three sisters, Erma McKye of Philadelphia, Pa., Ernesteen Rushton of Detroit, Mich., Eula Sue Fowler of Gaffney; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

    Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 400 S. Hudson St., Greenville.

    The family is at the home in Greenville.

    George W. Queen

    George Walter (Bobcat) Queen, 62, of 204 Walnut St., died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

    A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of Darlene Ramsey Queen and son of the late George Albert Queen and the le Virginia Clara Raines Queen. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and worked in maintenance and construction.

    Surviving in addition to his wife are a brother, Floyd Queen Sr. of Gaffney; five sisters, Hazel Peay of Startex, Ruby Ammons of Greenville, Mariam Burgess of Spartanburg, Sandra Mason of Lake Pamasoflkee, Fla. and Betty Mayor of Gaffney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Terry Pleasant, Robert Wells and Richard Lancaster. Burial will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens. Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.

    Pallbearers will be Kenneth Maynor, Arthur Frady, Floyd Queen Jr., Joe Bradley and Jeff Blanton.

    The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary in Blacksburg and at other times they will be at the home of Floyd Queen, 106 Westmont Drive, Gaffney.
