Dorman blasts Indians

With time running out, Sean Wasco scored a 2-point reversal to turn a defeat into a decision for the Gaffney High wrestling team.

Wasco was losing 1-0 when he executed a reversal on Dorman’s Chris Lambke in the third period for his only points of the match. The wrestlers were deadlocked for the majority of the match with Lambke scoring the lone point on an escape before Wasco’s heroics.

Wasco and David Lux provided the only highlights for Gaffney in the season-opening 63-9 loss to Dorman. Lux pinned his opponent in the 145 lb. weight class for the Indians’ other win.

Both wrestlers qualified for the Upper State last season.

Gaffney wrestling coach Greg Lawson said it is rare for wrestlers to win a match the way Wasco did.

“This never happens. He did what he needed to do to score points,” Lawson said. “I’m proud of our kids. The main thing is we are very young. We had five wrestlers who hadn’t touched a mat until tonight.”

Gaffney will travel to Ridge View for a match on Dec. 13 and Byrnes on Dec. 15.
