Is the truck there yet?

Like excited kids on Christmas morning, Gaffney High students waited Friday morning for a Salvation Army truck to arrive so students could begin loading it with presents. One of the school’s commons areas was packed with presents for 100 kids through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree project.

The Gaffney High Student Senate leads their first period classes in the yearly effort to help underprivileged children have a merrier Christmas. Students, teachers and administrators purchased bicycles, toys, and clothes that will be delivered to children whose families requested help from the Salvation Army.

“This is a great service project for our community. The student Senate adopts 100 children every year for Christmas through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree project,” Senate advisor Jessica Aycock said. “Every group in the school participates. It’s always a real good experience for the kids. It gives them a chance to give back to the community.”

The Senate has been working on gathering the Christmas presents for the past couple of weeks. The Angel Tree community service project follows on the heels of a food drive that brought in more than 4,000 canned goods for Meals on Wheels.

Among the Christmas presents, Aycock said there were 15 bicycles and plenty of warm coats for children to wear in the coming cold winter months.

“We try to buy a coat for every kid on our list so they will have something warm to wear this winter,” she said.
