Conway’s Bobby Wallace ran for 83 yards and one touchdown to lead the South to a 21-12 win over the North in the 2004 All-Star game Saturday. Wallace had 11 carries, scoring on a 6-yard run with 7:02 left in the first quarter to give the South a 14-0 lead. He caught three passes for 30 yards and was named the South’s most valuable player on offense. ‘‘We ran the ball well in spots, and we just stuck with what we felt would work best,’’ said Mullins coach Denver Cromer, an offensive assistant for the South. ‘‘We ran the ball straight ahead, ran the quarterback draw.’’ The South’s first touchdown was scored on a 27-yard interception return by Ray Davis, a defensive end from Pageland Central. Myrtle Beach’s J.D. Melton, who was awarded Friday night the Mr. Football title that is given to the state’s top prep player, connected with Kris Mizell of Beaufort on a 19-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give the South a 21-6 lead. Melton went 5-for-8 passing for 60 yards. ‘‘The coaches did a good job of making packages for people and what they were used to,’’ Melton said. ‘‘Me, I’m used to rolling out a lot, the quick game. They were really good at working with the players’ strengths.’’ The North was led by Chesnee quarterback Kyle Pettit, who completed 6-of-17 passes for 71 yards and one touchdown — a 2-yard pass to Mario Brown of J.L. Mann in the second quarter. Jonesville’s Jare Gault added 87 passing yards for the North, and Travil Jamison had 12 carries for 75 yards. The South’s defense allowed just 26 yards rushing on 20 carries in the first half, stopping two of the state’s leading rushers, Jamison and Greer’s Arthur Sitton. ‘‘We wanted kids with speed, because we knew speed can neutralize a good running back because if you are on him and stay on him, it’s hard for him to break loose,’’ said the South’s coach Dwayne Howell of East Clarendon. The South, who trails the series 31-24-2, took a 14-6 halftime lead.
