Location plays role in Strickland’s choice

Location. Location. Location.

It not only sells real estate, it attracts top-flight football players, too.

Gaffney Shrine Bowl receiver Andy Strickland said location played a key role in deciding to verbally commit last Monday to Wofford.

“It’s close to home,” he said. “They offered me a full ride. I just sat down with my family and came up with the decision.”

Strickland also received scholarship offers from Newberry and Presbyterian College and visited Gardner-Webb, Coastal Carolina, Furman and Duke.

But Wofford was his clear favorite.

“It’s a great school,” he said. “I like the coaches. They also have one of the best departments that I want to major in.”

Strickland intends to major in biology.

Wofford is recruiting Strickland as a wide receiver, although he also played cornerback, held for PATs and field goals and returned punts for the Indians.

He said Wofford’s emphasis on the run offensively isn’t a concern.

“They told me that they were only recruiting one wide receiver this year. But I’ll just play where they want me to play,” he said.

Despite missing four games with an ankle injury, Strickland finished with 39 catches for 592 yards, an average of 15 yards a reception.

Strickland was also selected to the all-region team.
