Perry "Pete" Mullinax

Cherokee County native

Perry "Pete" Mullinax, 49, of 1646 Beech St., died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

A native of Cherokee County, Mr. Mullinax was the son of the late Connie and Winnie Martin Mullinax and a member of East Gaffney Church of God.

Surviving are a brother, Ben Mullinax of the home; a sister, Shirley M. Harvey of Gaffney; and a special niece, Heather Mullinax of Gaff-ney.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Mullinax was preceded in death by two sisters, Vivian Whiting and Irene Lydia.

The family will receive friends at the Harvey home, 216 Marietta St., Gaffney, until noon today. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Revs. William Blanton, Paul Tessnear and Nasser Alawi.

Cora C. Davis

Cherokee County native

Cora Crawford Davis, 65, of 554 White's Road, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late David R. and Vira Wilson Crawford and a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Steve Sturm of Savannah, Tenn., and David Sturm of Lafayette, Ind.; two sisters, Frances Alderman and Flora Haulk, both of Gaffney; two brothers, Eugene Crawford and Fred Crawford, both of Gaffney; and five grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Crawford and Lee Crawford.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Edward McAbee. Burial will be in Draytonville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Crawford, Rick Crawford, Furman Cooper, Bobby Duncan, Douglas Crawford and David Haulk.

The family is at the residence.

Billy Gene Henderson

Self-employed electrician

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– Billy Gene Henderson, 71, of 614 Pecan Park Road, formerly of Gaffney, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at his residence.

A native of Gaffney, he was the son of the late Jesse Henderson and th late Bertie Martin Henderson. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a self-employed electrician.

Surviving are two daughters, Skyla Standridge and Debbie Blakely, both of Gaffney; a sister, Juanita Hughey of Gaffney; a niece, Amelia Dickerson of Spartanburg; and grandchildren, Ashleigh Hambright and Megan Standridge, both of Gaffney.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Nelson.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens in Gaffney.

Family members are at their respective homes.

Marie Padgett Kelly

Teacher, businesswoman

BLACKSBURG – Marie Padgett Kelly, 88, died at her residence Sunday morning, Dec. 26, 2004.

She was a lifelong resident of Cherokee County. Her parents were Thomas R. Padgett and Mary Frances Albright Padgett. She was a veteran of World War II, a public school teacher, and a businesswoman. Her husband was the late Charles M. Kelly.

Surviving are a sister, Jo Carol Padgett Pulliam of Spartanburg; a son, Thomas M. Kelly of Mauldin; a daughter, Ann Kelly Tadlock of Blacksburg; and a son-in-law, George Michael Tadlock, also of Blacksburg.

The family is at the residence.

Ella Mae Bennett

Retired from textiles

SHELBY – Ella Mae Suttles Bennett, 91, of 6205 Riley St., died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of Joseph Collins Bennett and daughter of the late Andy Suttles and the late Maggie Thomason Suttles. She was retired from Musgrove Mill and Pacolet Mill.

Mrs. Bennett was a Christian lady who taught a teenage Sunday school class in her early years. From her early years, she always helped people before herself and even unto death, she would call people to her bedside to pray for them. She was a member of Proclaiming the Word Ministries in Grover, N.C.

Surviving are two sons, the Rev. William Douglas Bennett of the home and Richard Emanuel Bennett of Shelby; a daughter, Catherine Juanita Bennett Parks of the home; a brother, Fayte Suttles of Union; four sisters, Leona Henderson of Clifton, Roselle Pressley of Pacolet, Lorrene Parris of Cowpens and Elsie Wright of Spartanburg; eight grandchildren, Karen Bradshaw, Joanne Brown, Kathy Crocker, Patricia Courtney, Donald Bennett, Carl Lynn Smith, Ella Jo Price Bennett and Timothy Leon Bennett; 16 great-grandchildren, including Jeffery Bennett, who was raised in the home; two great-great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by two daughters, Bobbie Marie Bennett and Carolyn Bennett; a sister, Geneva Henderson; and three brothers, Carl Suttles, Grady Suttles and Leroy Suttles.

Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Sherry Moss and Bruce Kanipe. Burial was in Pacolet Methodist Cemetery, Pacolet.

Pallbearers were Justin Crocker, William Brown, Phillip Wright, Jeffery Bennett, John Rohrer Jr., John Rohrer Sr., Danny Courtney and Danny Bolin.

The family is at the residence, 6205 Riley St., Shelby.

Frances W. Mullins

Retired from R&W Floor Co.

Frances Wilkerson Mullins, 84, of 221 Overbrook Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, at Brookview HealthCare Center.

A native of Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Paul E. Wilkerson and the late Edna Whelchel Wilkerson. She was retired from R&W Floor Company, where she was secretary and bookkeeper, and was a member of Christian Heights Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sisters, Gayle W. Tindall, Marion W. Lozynski and Roxie W. Scruggs, all of Gaffney; three brothers, Billy V. Wilkerson, Roy "Pat" Wilkerson and Edd W. Wilkerson, all of Gaffney; six nephews and three nieces.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by Dr. Wofford Caughman.

The family will receive friends Tuesday morning from 9:45-10:45 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home and at other times they will be at their respective homes.

Debra P. Burke

Manager of Fast Point

on O'Neal Street

Debra Ann Phillips Burke, 46, of 514 Nature's Trail, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she was the wife of Daryel G. Burke, and daughter of Pearl Marcel Evans Phillips of Gaffney and the late Cecil W. Phillips Sr. She was store manager at Fast Point convenience store on O'Neal Street and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two daughters, Shavon B. Puckett of Pacolet and Tabitha B. Johnson of the home; two sons, Jason Burke of Cleveland, Ohio, and Raymond Burke of Gaffney; six brothers, Cecil Phillips Jr., Dennis Phillips, Jimbo Phillips, Jeffrey Phillips, Troy Phillips and Steve Phillips, all of Ohio; two sisters, Clora Ferrell of Gaffney and Trina Everett of Kentucky; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rich Lancaster. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jason Burke, Billy Johnson, Cliff Ferrell, Raymond Burke, Shannon Puckett and Chester Lemley.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home.

Olive E. McKown

Retired school teacher

Olive Elizabeth McKown, 94, of 502-1/2 S. Petty St., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at her residence.

A native of Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Edward Lee McKown and the late Bessie Lancaster McKown. She was a retired school teacher from Blue Ridge High School in Spartanburg County and also worked as Director of Employment Management at Erwin Mills.

Miss McKown graduated from Gaffney High School and Winthrop College. She was a long and faithful member of Mount Ararat Baptist Church.

Surviving are a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, Miss McKown was preceded in death by her brothers, George W. McKown, Guy Lancaster McKown, Edward L. McKown and Jonathan Z. McKown, and sisters, Ruth McKown Snuggs and French McKown Speer.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mount Ararat Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family is at the home.

Clothel B. Dillingham

Retired substitute teacher

RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. – Clothel Bostic Dillingham, 86, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Hospice House of Rutherford County.

A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of H.D. Dillingham and daughter of the late M.C. Bostic Sr. and Ara Harris Bostic. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton, a homemaker and retired substitute elementary school teacher.

Surviving are a son, Randy Dillingham of Rutherfordton; a daughter, Donna D. Karakash of Asheville; a brother, Lewis Bostic of Gaffney; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton, conducted by the Rev. Dean Baughn. Burial will be in Rutherfordton City Cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.

Dewey McKelvey

Vietnam veteran

CHESNEE – Dewey Mc-Kelvey, 77, formerly of 103 Dillon St., died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, at Alterras Assisted Living.

A native of Rutherford County, N.C., he was the son of the late Vick and Hattie Leopard McKelvey. A 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol McKelvey of Newnan, Ga.; two sons, Richard McKelvey of Columbus, Ga., and David Mc-Kelvey of Taylors; two sisters, Francis Turner and Christine Scruggs; four half-sisters, Pat Edwards, Margaret Bryza, Kathy Waldrup and Ruth Filbeck; three half-brothers, Cecil McKelvey, Harold McKelvey and Michael McKelvey; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. McKelvey was preceded in death by two daughters, Janet Clark and Charlotte Gallamore.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. at Eggers Funeral Home in Chesnee. Services will follow in the funeral home chapel, conducted by the Rev. James Childers. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens.

Jennie G. Henderson

Sister of Gaffney resident

UNION – Jennie Lee Goode Henderson, 81, of 279 Vaughan Rd,, wife of Jessie H. Henderson, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at 9:45 a.m. at her home after a long illness.

She was born in York County on May 12, 1923, a daughter of the late Deacon James and Janie Foster Goode. She joined New Emanuel Chapel Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, usher, assistant superintendent of Sunday School, Pastors’ Aide, Missionary and Kitchen Ministries. She also help organize the Sunbeam Choir, which is now known as the Gospel Ensemble.

Surviving in addition to her husband are seven sons, Townsend Goode, Harry Henderson, Maxie Henderson, all of Union, Albert Goode of Spartanburg, Tommy Henderson of Gaffney, Melvin Henderson of Jonesville, and Dennis Henderson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two daughters, Queen Henderson of Union and Eva L. Henderson of Jonesville; two grandchildren reared in the home, Keith Wilkes of Inglewood, Calif., and Andre Henderson of Jonesville; 37 additional grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Marie Battle of New Rochelle, N.Y.; a brother, Elzie Goode of Union; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Emanuel Chapel Baptist Church in Kelton with the Rev. James Mason officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

The family is at the home, 279 Vaughan Road, Union.

Dorothy P. Smith

Retired from Limestone Mfg.

Dorothy Elizabeth Petty Smith, 68, of 115 Buckson St., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at her home.

Widow of the Rev. Whitworth Smith, she was born in Gaffney, a daughter of the late Sheron B. Petty and Maggie “Loutee” Brown Petty. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, where she served as former president of the Willing Workers Missionary, a member of the Vernon Choir and Mt. Sinai Senior Citizens. She was also a member of Gaffney Senior Citizens.

Mrs. Smith was a retired employee of Limestone Manufacturing Company. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Petty and Sheron L. Petty.

Surviving are a son, J. Bernard Petty of Marietta, Ga.; three daughters, Julia P. Bright and Janice Petty, both of Norfolk, Va., and Mamie Petty of the home; a sister, Jacqueline P. Black of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren, including Anthony Petty of Norfolk, Va., and Valencia Petty of West Columbia.

Arrangements are incomplete. The Gilmore Mortuary is in charge.
