Band director submits resignation

By SCOTT POWELL

Ledger Staff Writer

Granard Middle School Band Director Zachary Greene submitted his resignation Tuesday.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department has charged Greene with criminal domestic violence for an alleged incident at his home between December 16 and 19.

Greene is accused of flipping chairs, couches and a bed over inside the couple’s apartment on Overbrook Drive before throwing his wife to the floor, according to an incident report at the sheriff’s office. The woman complained of arm and leg pain.

Greene was released Dec. 21 on $1,087 bond.

Cherokee County Superintendent Dr. Bill James said he received a written letter of resignation from Greene prior to Tuesday’s school board meeting. The resignation is effective immediately.

Calvary Baptist Church Rev. Terry Pleasant has been given a long-term substitute teacher position to work with the school’s band students, James said. A permanent replacement for Greene will be hired at a later date.

While not a certified teacher, Pleasant has eight years of music experience. He has been a regular volunteer at Granard Middle since the district started an outreach program aimed at getting local ministers involved in schools.

“Terry Pleasant was one of the first ministers to volunteer when we started our ministerial alliance three years ago,” Granard Middle Principal Charles Wright said. “Terry is a great guy. The kids really enjoy being around him. We are very fortunate to have him at our school.”
