Council OKs renaming two city streets

By LARRY HILLIARD

Ledger Staff Writer

Some city residents and businesses will be changing addresses without moving.

At the request of council member Tom Reid, Gaffney City Council on Monday approved renaming two city streets and naming a new street.

Park Street, which stretches from Montgomery Street to Hwy. 29, will be renamed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Council also agreed to extend Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane through West Frederick Street. Dr. L.M. Rosemond Lane now ends at Logan Street.

A current dirt road located near West Buford Street and Frontage Road will be named for John Smith Watkins, a landowner who lived in the area.

Council members Dennis Ramsey and Wayne Ramsey opposed the motion.

Dennis Ramsey said he was concerned over the cost to businesses and homeowners to change their addresses.

Reid said the road changes would be forwarded to the U.S. Postal Service and 9-1-1.

The procedure is expected to take at least three months.
