Lula Mae Cannon

Retired teacher’s

assistant from GHS

Lula Mae Littlejohn Cannon, 58, of 212 Villa Drive, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at her home.

Wife of Jimmy Cannon Sr., she was born in Gaffney, a daughter of the late Dever and Rehobirth Faucett Littlejohn. She was a 1965 graduate of Granard High School and did further studies at Spartanburg Technical College.

Mrs. Cannon was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Musical Choir, advisor and co-chairlady of Teens Against Pregnancy, Bible School teacher and assistant Sunday School teacher of the Junior Class. For several years she worked for H&R Block Company and was a retired teacher's assistant at Gaffney High School.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dever Littlejohn Jr., and a sister, Johnnie Joe Epps.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Jimmy Cannon Jr. of Gaffney and Christopher Cannon of Shelby; four brothers, Edward Littlejohn, Albert Littlejohn, Billy Littlejohn and A.W. Littlejohn, all of Gaffney; two sisters, Gerutha Sarratt and Louise Simmons, both of Gaffney; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

Robert C. Spate

Retired from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

COWPENS – Robert Claude Spate, 68, of 120 Robin Road, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A native of Missouri, he was the husband of Verrill Martin Spate of the home and son of the late Claude and Juanita Murray Spate. He was retired from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Gaffney, where he served as an elder.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Joseph Spate of Painesville, Ohio, and Jeffrey Spate of Powder Springs, Ga.; a daughter, Linda Williamson of Cedartown, Ga.; a step-daughter, Katie Gillespie of Grayson, Ga.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Heather Wood of Harbor City, Calif., and Marilyn Ramsey of Kansas City, Mo.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Spate was preceded in death by two sisters, June Glenn and Shirley Stori.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-8 p.m. at White Columns of Gaffney and at other times they will be at the home.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Gaffney, conducted by Bishop Manfred Martin. Body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be James Gillespie, Micah Devaney, Joseph Devaney, Steve Martin, Aaron Martin, Keith Clawson, Frankie Lee and Dewitt Elliott.

Memorials may be made to the Fast Offering Fund, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 701 W. Buford St., Gaffney, S.C. 29341.

Hattie J. Norris

Cleveland County native

Hattie Jane Norris, 93, of 2404 Camp Creek Church Road, Mooresboro, N.C., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at her home.

Daughter of the late Jim Moore and the late Lydia King Moore, she was a native of Cleveland County, N.C., and widow of the Rev. Willie Ray Norris. She was a member of Mikes Creek Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess, member of the Missionary Society and mother of the church. She was also a member of the Thickety Mountain Ministers Wives organization.

Surviving are a son, Edward Ray Norris of the home; a daughter, Willie Mae Norris of Westbury, Long Island, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Shelia Battle of Mooresboro; seven grandchildren, including Christopher Norris of the home whom she reared as a son; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mikes Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. michael Henderson and Dr. Leon C. Rector. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home.

Lula Mae Allison

Retired textile employee

Lula Mae Allison, 94, formerly of 112 Van Buren St., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late Landrum Lewis Allison and the late Hattie Chapman Allison. She was a retired textile employee and member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Miss Allison was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew Allison, Harvey Allison and Leroy "Chick" Allison; and three sisters, Augusta Phillips, Selma Harmon and Ellen Allison.

Arrangements are incomplete. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.

Joe Byron Owens

Dock worker

for trucking company

BLACKSBURG – Joe Byron Owens, 68, of 633 Peeler Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born in Cherokee Falls, he was the husband of Evaleen Hambright "Bootie" Owens and son of the late William "Bill" Owens and the late Lula Rhea Ramsey Owens. He was a dock worker with a trucking company and was a member of Christian Fellowship Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Shane Owens and his wife, Nikki, of Gaffney and Joe Wayne Owens of Blacksburg; daughter, Candy Kirby of Blacksburg; a brother, Buddy Wayne Owens of Blacksburg; a sister, Judy Wray of Blacksburg; five grandchildren, Star Kirby, Derek Kirby, Joe Barlow Owens, all of Blacksburg, Jesse Owens of Gaffney and Issac Owens of Chesnee; and two great-grandchildren, Joe Brent Owens and James Austin Owens, both of Blacksburg.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Owens was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry Owens, Doug Owens and Bobby Owens, and three sisters, Sybil Goodson, Doris Earls and Libby Ann Childers.

Services will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, conducted by the Revs. Willie Lanier, Greg Martin and Lucky Earls. Body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mike Ramsey, Jesse Owens, Chucky Lavecchio, Darrall Kirby, Joe Barlow Owens and Jimmy Scruggs.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary and at other times they will be at the home of Candy Kirby, 545 Bear Creek Road, Blacksburg.
