Yamamoto begins second year as resident conductor of Charlotte Symphony Orchestra

Alan Yamamoto The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra will perform tonight at 7:30 in Fullerton Auditorium, the third performance in the Limestone College/Cherokee County Arts Council's 2005-2006 season. Admission is by season membership or individual tickets will be sold at the door.

Alan Yamamoto begins his second season as resident conductor of the orchestra, having been appointed to the post in 2003 by Christof Perick, music director, following a season-long national search. Yamamoto appears as conductor on the Classics and Mostly Mozart series each season, leads the symphony’s Lollipops series and Education Concerts, and conducts for the symphony’s collaborations with North Carolina Dance Theatre.

Yamamoto most recently served as resident conductor of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder for nine season. He also founded and was music director of the Modern Musical Festival, which completed five successful seasons under his leadership. He holds degrees from the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Michigan, and most recently completed his doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Colorado – Boulder.

Maestro Yamamoto’s guest conducting engagements have included the Colorado Symphony, Boulder Philharmonic, Spokane Symphony, and Taylor Ballet Americana. Further to his commitment to music of our time, he has collaborated with numerous contemporary ensembles and organizations, including the Composers Forum in Ann Arbor, the Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players, the Nuclassix, Griffin, and Dinosaur Annex Ensembles, and the Graduate Composers Seminar at Harvard. His coming projects include the Schoenberg/Stein transcription of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony for chamber ensemble in San Francisco, an undertaking he has previously performed to enthusiastic audiences in both Boulder and New Orleans.

Yamamoto is also collaborating with the film maker Hobart Bell in a series of experimental art films that employ original libretti and commissioned music.

Founded in 1932, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra has grown into one of the premier musical groups in the Southeast, giving 115 performances each season and reaching an annual attendance of over 250,000 listeners. Building on a 72-year tradition, the orchestra is led by Perick, an acclaimed German conductor.

The group is the largest and most active performing arts organization in the central Carolinas, employing over 100 professional musicians.
