The Cherokee County School Dis-trict is offering school choice to parents for the 2005-2006 school year.

The district sent out letters last week giving parents the option to request transfers to other county schools. This is a one-time opportunity for parents to send their children to a different school where space is available.

“Students who are already enrolled in schools outside of their assigned attendance area, with permission, will not need to request a transfer,” superintendent Dr. Bill James said. “They will be assigned to the schools they attend.”

Transfer requests for students in 5K through grade 12 will be accepted by the district until March 1. No requests will be considered after that date. All requests for transfer will be evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Students living within a school attendance area are given the first priority for school assignment. Once a transfer is approved, James said students must provide their own transportation when attending a school outside of their assigned attendance area.

The school board policy is called limited enrollment because students that transfer are required to complete their remaining elementary, middle, or high school grades at the new school.

Parents interested in transferring their child should pick up a “Request to Attend School Outside Attendance Zone/Assignment” form from their current school. The top of the form should be completed at the school and a copy left at the school office.

Parents should take the transfer request form to the school where they want their child to attend next year.

Parents will be notified in writing by June 30 regarding the status of their transfer request.
