Special events

n The Republican Women’s Club is sponsoring a “Heart of the Party” Valentine’s dance Saturday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. Proceeds will be donated to the Republican Party Scholarship Fund. The dance will be at 1507 Old Metal Road, three miles past Thickety Mountain Fish Camp. Single ticket donations are $12 and couples are $20. Tickets can be purchased at Sears on Floyd Baker Boulevard or from any Republican Women’s Club member. A few tickets will be available at the door. Call 489-3317 for more information.

Community events

n The Greater Gaffney Ministerial Association is sponsoring Community Lenten Services from noon to 12:30 p.m. for six Wednesdays in Lent and on Good Friday. Services will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1600 W. Floyd Baker Blvd. Different ministers will be speaking on one of the seven last words of Jesus at each service. Today’s Ash Wednesday message by the Rev. John Hunsuck will focus on “ Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do .” The 30-minute service will be followed by a light lunch with donations accepted.

n Lighthouse Tabernacle of Love on Crestmont Drive will have revival services Feb. 10-12 at 7 p.m. Speakers will be the Revs. Paul Tessner of Pacolet, Rosevelt Kimbrell of Startex and Marvin Durham of Gaffney. Call 488-9985 for more information.

The Celestial Choir of Limestone Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 43rd anniversary on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m.

Shady Grove Baptist Church YWAs will have its annual “100 Women in Red Love Fest” on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Dekota Grier McCullough, wife of the Rev. John McCullough Jr., pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Gastonia. Theme for the program is “But the Greatest of These is Love” taken from I Corinthians 13:1-8, 13.”

The Shady Grove Baptist Church Youth Ministry will present Black History mini-dramas during the Sunday School hour on Feb. 20 and 27. Sunday, Feb. 20, the beginners, primaries, intermediates and middle schools will have charge of the program and the teens and young adults will lead the Feb. 27 program.

Meetings

Members of the Foothills Chapter of Korean War Veterans Association will meet Saturday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. for a Valentine’s luncheon with their spouse or guest at Ryans’ Family Steakhouse Restaurant, 1225 Woodruff Road, Spartanburg. Fund raisers

“Lost Penny Day” is held each year on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12, at the Senior Centers of Cherokee County. The special day is set aside to collect pennies that have been forgotten about – those in pockets, car floorboards, sofas, etc. – and to donate them to a local charity. Everyone is encouraged to find lost pennies and bring them to the centers in Gaffney or Blacksburg by February 12. All donations will be used for the home-delivered meal program. Education

Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center will offer a parenting class beginning February 17 and continuing for six consecutive weeks form 10-11:30 a.m. on Thursdays at the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center, 250 Dewey Ave. To enroll, call 864-585-0366, ext. 327.
