Gaffney High offensive coordinator coach Greg Lawson will remain with the Indians - and he couldn’t be happier.

Lawson was a finalist for the head coaching position at the new Southpointe High School in Rock Hill. He was passed over in favor of longtime Northwestern High defensive coordinator Bobby Carroll, who was expected to be hired today.

“I’m very happy here in Gaffney,” Lawson said. “I feel like there’s no doubt that we have a state championship caliber team here next year. This was just an opportunity to fulfill a dream. It was a situation that fit me.”

Lawson said it’s the only job he’s applied for since becoming part of the Gaffney High staff two years ago.

Lawson was born near the new Southpointe High School and lived in Rock Hill until his family moved to Union when he was a second-grader. He said he still has close ties to the Rock Hill area.

“I haven’t applied for any other job and the only reason I applied for the Southpointe position was that it was a special situation,” he said. “It’s a new high school and the coach would be able to bring in his own people and he wouldn’t be compared to anybody.

“I feel honored to be considered for the job.”

Lawson said his career goal is to become a head coach.

“That’s my ultimate goal,” he said.

Lawson became a respected offensive coordinator by helping the Indians capture the 2003 state championship. Lawson was instrumental in the development of quarterback Antonio Gaffney, who earned a scholarship to South Carolina State.

Before coming to Gaffney, Lawson served as the quarterback coach at Union High, his alma mater.
