Election tomorrow
Ledger Staff Writer
Three names will appear on Tuesday’s ballot for the Blacksburg Town Council elections. Councilwoman Janie Wilson is running unopposed for a second term in District 4. Councilman Jack B. Borders is seeking re-election to his District 3 seat. He faces opposition from Steve Wilson, a longtime Blacksburg resident and former Blacksburg High football coach. Borders, retired owner of Borders Landscaping, has served eight years on Blacksburg Town Council. He filled the vacant seat of longtime councilman Joe Hicks Whitener Sr., who died of cancer three years ago. Borders has lived in Blacksburg for more than 45 years and considers himself a conservative who does not believe increased taxation and increasing the cost of services is the best answer for town government. He hopes to bring more business and industry to Blacksburg, he said. Wilson, a 15-year Blacksburg resident, is a transition coordinator at Broome High School and an assistant coach on the 2004 AA state champion Broome football team. He has also taught at Blacksburg and Gaffney high schools and the Cherokee County Alternative School and has also volunteered with the Peach Festival. Wilson says he does not want to get into politics, he just wants to help Blacksburg.
