James E. Champion Fought in Battle of the

  • Bulge in World War II
  • James Edward Champion, 81, of 1017 State Line Road, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at his residence.

    A native of Cherokee County, he was the widower of Betty Ruppe Champion and son of the late John Henderson Champion and the late Hattie Self Champion. He was a retired carpenter from Cone Mill in Cliffside, N.C., where he operated the wood shop. He took part in three major battles in World War II with the U.S. Army, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of State Line Baptist Church.

    Surviving are a son, Melvin Champion of Mayo; a daughter, Ellen C. Hayes of Chesnee; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith Wyatt of Chesnee and Lois Champion of Gaffney.

    In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Champion was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Champion.

    Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shuford-Hatcher Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Eddie Bolin and Alan Hood. Burial will be in Springhill Memorial Gardens in Chesnee. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

    Pallbearers will be John Hayes Jr., Cameron Phillips, Chris Scruggs, David Mathis, Joe Mathis and Michael Mathis.

    The family is at the home of his son, Melvin Champion, 4678 Chesnee Hwy., Mayo.

    Woodford B. Guinn

    Gaffney native

    Woodford B. Guinn, 92, of Harriman, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Rockwood Health Care Center.

    Mr. Guinn was born and raised in Gaffney. He was a member of the Kingston Foursquare Gospel Church and the Church Alive Foursquare Gospel in Spring City for 61 years and taught Sunday School for most of those years.

    Mr. Guinn moved to Kingston in 1942 to work in Oak Ridge. He was a 63-year member of the Carpenters Local No. 50 in Knoxville.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Leon and Dovie Medley Guinn; brothers, Floyd, LeRoy, David, Archie, Desmont and Ethewl Guinn; and granddaughter, Crystal Lee Guinn.

    Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Juanita Herrell Guinn of Harriman; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Rhonda Guinn of Knoxville, Gary and Gloria Guinn of Harriman; son, Stephen Guinn of Kingston; sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and Howard Eggers of Gaffney; grandchildren, Meghan and Kevin Guinn of Knoxville and Misty and Candi Guinn of Harriman.

    Services were held Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Kyker Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bob Butts and L. Marie Broady. Burial will be at 11 a.m. today in Roane Memorial Gardens.

    Bertie G. Horn

    Retired from Oxford Ind.

    Bertie Grant Horn, 82, of 607 W. Floyd Baker Blvd., died Thursday, March 31, 2005, in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.

    A native of Shelby, she was the widow of Milburn Loyd Horn and daughter of the late George Wesley Horn and the late Laura Mayhew Horn. She was retired from Oxford Ind. and was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.

    Surviving are three sons, George E. Horn of the home, Buford Horn of Pickens and Bobby Horn of Cowpens; three daughters, Patricia Horton of Cowpens, Becky Hill and Alicie Horne, both of Gaffney; a sister, Corine Smith of Gaffney; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

    Arrangements are incomplete. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.
