Harris

Gaffney’s Justin Harris wouldn’t allow York to spoil his team’s Senior Day celebration.

Justin Harris finally scored the game-winning goal a minute into the second overtime to lift the Indians to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Cougars.

“Everybody played well. It was a good win,” said Gaffney coach Frank Ridlehoover, who started all seven of his seniors in recognition of Senior Day.

Gaffney, which improved to 13-4 overall and 5-4 in region play, clinched the third spot in the region.

It’s the team’s highest ever region finish.

The Cougars struck first about five minutes into the game before Matt Skinner tied it with an assist from Phillip Lester with 5:46 left before halftime.

Despite some good chances, there was no scoring in the second half or in the first overtime. Harris finally put an end to things with an assist from Juan Martinez.

The Indians outshot the visitors, 29-14.

Gaffney will play top-ranked Northwestern on Tuesday to end the regular season.

Former BHS star

enrolls at Gaffney

Former Blacksburg star basketball and football player Quinton Hemphill has enrolled at Gaffney High after a brief stay at Independence High in Charlotte. Gaffney A.D. Phil Strickland said Hemphill will be eligible immediately to play sports.

Pfeiffer sweeps CVAC

Pfeiffer swept the men’s and women’s golf championship at the Hartsville Country Club on Tuesday.

Pfeiffer shot a 965, 28 strokes better than the Lady Saints and Anderson Lady Trojans, who tied for second.

Limestone’s Holly Tomkins just missed an individual championship, finishing two strokes behind Pfeiffer’s Fiona Hindshaw, who carded a 231.

In men’s play, the Saints shot a 949 to finish 10th. Chris Taylor paced the Saints with a 233, one stroke better than teammate Paul Butler.

Yellow Jackets nip

Gaffney golfers

Fort Mill edged Gaffney by a stroke in a three-way match on Tuesday.

The Yellow Jackets shot a 162, a stroke better than the Indians, who carded a 163.

Rock Hill placed third with a 189.

Patrick Hopper led the Indians with a 39, a stroke better than teammates Josh Gallman and Andy Karns, who had 40s.

Brandon Coggins and Gage Clary shot 44s to round out the Indians’ scoring.

Gaffney falls to 10-2.

Saints rout

Lees-McRae

The Limestone men’s lacrosse team cruised to an easy 19-2 victory over Lees-McRae in first round action of the Deep South Tournament Tuesday.

David Wooster had three goals while Nolan Heavenor, Roger Vyse and Harley Beckham had two goals each to pace the Saints, who jumped to a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

Limestone advances to play the winner of the game between Mars Hill and St. Andrews.

In women’s action, Lauren Bilski and Christina Anderson each scored three goals to lead Queens to a 12-9 victory over the visiting Limestone Lady Saints on Tuesday.

The Lady Saints (5-2) are a game back of conference leaders Pfeiffer and Queens.

York edges

Lady Indians on PKs

York edged the Gaffney girls’ soccer team, 5-4, on penalty kicks Monday.

Kristi Caldwell had two goals in regulation. Caldwell, who ended the season with 15 goals, and Chelsey Williams scored on penalty kicks.
