Summer hoop league registration underway
Sign up for the Cherokee County Summer Basketball League is underway. The league is for boys and girls in age groups 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17. Sign up at Sagesports or at the Cherokee County Recreation Department or by calling Chris Dewberry 488-9596, Laymond Dewberry 425-5860 or Earl Smith 489-2072. There is a $25 registration fee. The registration ends on May 27. Beginning April 23, the league will sponsor a teaching clinic each Saturday until the start of the regular season, according to league founder Laymond Dewberry. The clinic will be held at B.D. Lee Elementary from 2 to 3:30 p.m. for ages 5-12 and from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for ages 13-17. The clinics will last until the start of the regular season later this month. Gamecock Club Spring Banquet May 3
The Spartanburg-Cherokee County Gamecock Club will hold its Spring Banquet on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. The $10 speaker only tickets can be purchased by calling Hank Jolly at 489-0110 or Mike Phillips at 488-3730. Basketball coach Dave Odom and football coach Steve Spurrier will be the guest speakers.
Local little league results Bryon Munsterman struck out eight and Jordan Jolly homered twice to lift First Piedmont Federal to an 8-7 win over Hamrick Mills in Major League action last week. Munsterman also homered and scored three runs. Travis Hamrick had a double and two singles. Jared Mills homered and Matt Varner scored twice in a losing effort. Ritchi Williams and Mills pitched for Hamrick Mills. In Mite League action, Trent Satterwhite, Brice Bolin, Tristan Whelchel and Brett Ward all homered and Greggor Kirby and Jared White each knocked in runs as TransMed beat Palmetto Bank, 21-11. In another Mite League contest, Caleb Byars and Desmond Montgomery each went 2 for 2 and Alex Spencer, Devin Teague, Caleb McCraw and Quan Allen all homered to help Sanders Bros. to an 18-6 victory over Farm Bureau. Andrew Hinchliffe had a grand slam for the winners, who scored nine runs in the third to seal the win. In Major League play, Brandon Wright gave up just two runs and David Hopper walked and scored two runs to lead VFW to a 3-2 win over Classic Windows. Mike Wood singled and scored the game-winning run. Drayton Queen had the game-winning hit for VFW. Dillon Spencer was on the mound for Classic Windows. Wright combined with Grayson Goforth as VFW topped Byars Used Cars, 14-0, to notch another win last week. Goforth and Wood each had inside the park homers and Hopper, Queen, Aaron White and Wright all scored runs for the winners. Wood was the defensive standout.
